Mounts for plastic fuel cans...?

So in my quest to build my OverlandKJ, I am leaning toward eventually getting a couple of these plastic Jerry cans (MFC) we all have seen around:

I like these mainly due to the lighter weight and I like the looks but I am wondering what the best mount is to use if I want to mount them vertically, say...on the tail gate with a fabbed mount (spare will be on the roof rack).

I know of the classic red Military Jeep-style:

and I like it but I am a bit worried about the plastic can rubbing on the metal holder over time.

I looked into this one and like it too...

but from what I gather it only mounts to a roof rack. I don't want to carry the gas on the roof. And the same plastic on metal issue is there.

How tough are these cans? I know they are quite impact and crush resistant but what about being resistant to a hole "chafing" into the side from hours rattling around in a metal carrier.

How do you LOST Jeepers carry your plastic gas cans? Please post pics if you can!

i use old style Nato metal cans and once ya make a good gasket for them, they dont leak but anyway,

ya seem to be able to strap them pretty dang tight to the carriers so they shouldnt be movin around enough to cause rub wear, and if you wanted to be extra effective against that rub, you could put some thin rubber, like inner tube rubber around the edges and paint the holders black which is kinda how i did it on my polaris

had rubbing problems on a can mostly because it was the wrong can for the holder

but we wont get into how i managed to go flying into a pine tree and puncture the plastic can in the first place

JeepinJarhead03... that's a good idea... the lining with rubber. I had leather in mind and I was thinking of applying it to the can with spray adhesive of some sort. I think I like your idea better. I'm hoping the red Blitz can holder, lined with rubber and the Sceptre plastic can will be a good fit. My worry is the desert sand getting between the can and the mount will chafe a hole into the can over time. I guess if I keep an eye on the condition of the can and replace it when needed I should be OK.

I don't want to use the metal MFC's because I'm trying to keep the set up as light as possible because I'm going to be mounting it to the tail gate where the spare is now. In time, I plan to have a metal shop in Burbank fab a simple mount that bolts right to the tail gate in place of the spare tire mount, and then the 2 red Blitz can holders will bolt to that... but we'll see.

JJsKJ, I LOVE those GERI cans and that carrier shown at the link you posted is super cool. For me, with this particular accessory it's sort of more about nostalgia and looks than the best form & function. I really like the 'old school' look of the 2 red gas cans together. My next rig will use the GERIs for sure.

Any other LOSTers using (or considering) the plastic Sceptre cans for the KJ...? of course any and all (well minded) input is appreciated.

I would think the plastic cans would be abrasion resistant enough to not "wear a hole through" but if its a concern, I think the best idea would be adhesive rubber. You can buy it here, $20 for a 12" x 24" sheet, where you can cut your shapes out with scissors / exacto. Use cardboard to fit in the holder and trace the pattern you need, then transfer it to the rubber sheet.

I've attempted to find the best sheet from McMaster, property and cost wise, for use on the exterior of a vehicle. I use this to insulate my roof racks from the roof.

(For some reason whenever I hear "rubber sheets" I think of Cousin Eddy from Christmas Vacation...) :shock:

You won't have a problem with the metal rubbing through the can.

I'd hate to see those gas loaded missles take off from the roof in an accident. JMO.

OK, I think I may have my set-up determined...

-Move spare to roof rack, remove spare bracket.

-Have a shallow bracket fabricated (aluminum?) to mount 2 Blitz carriers as close to the hinge-side as possible without limiting the opening of the gate.

-Line carriers with thin rubber and hold cans in with ratchet straps.

As for weight, I need to weigh my MOAB w/ MTR that I have on the carrier now and compare that with the cumulative weight of the carriers, cans and gas and see where I came out. I figure mounting the cans as close to the gate and hinges as possible is a little better than keeping the stock spare tire mount and building onto that.

We'll see what actually ends up on the Jeep.

The plastic cans will not fit in the Blitz carriers. I already tried, the plastic cans are too big.
