I just picked up an 06 Libby CRD, with 60k on it for a little less than $15k.

Since during my 1st test drive of the vehicle, and my second voyage around town afterownership, the engine stuttered, sputtered, and lost all power. Thanks to those here, I was able to know about the fuel filter problem, get a good price on the Libby, and fix it after getting home ;) Mods to come, but I'll enjoy getting to know her first :) :) Any diesel whose last fill up was back in August, and had less than 1/4 tank would have fuel issues, and I'm glad I could quickly find out about, and fix, the air entrainment myself. BIG THANKS and PROPS TO THOSE HERE :!: :!: :JEEPIN:

I'm not a noob to diesel, as I've had a 02 VW Golf TDI for a few years now, which led me to becoming a diesel convert. Love the power, the mileage, and the longevity of these things! I'm hoping that within a few months I'll get to the CCV mods, and maybe a chip/tune for better mileage.

I have a VAGCOM Hex/CAN cable, which I'll use to peek into this beast, and I've seen the threads here about vagcom, scangaugeII, etc. But, is there any other threads that people can point me too about making modifications through a CAN cable? (ie - with the VW, I had set the EGR threshold much higher, so it was used much less--wondering if that would be easier than the SEGR and other mods I've seen here).

Howdy - Welcome to LOST

when you change the filter - don't forget to check the fuel heater - right plug on the fuel head - and the most common place for air leaks - the new style fuel head seems to fix it.

and you need to look at a Provent or EHM to stop oil from blowing into the intake manifold.

Thanks for the tips. I have a mod similar to the EHM on my VW TDI. So simple to put in. If you ever look through the VW TDIClub forums, here's the mod I used, which I will probably do something similar to on the Jeep (just so there is a vacuum drawing in crankcase fumes):
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=50207&page=2

Same idea as the Elephant Hose Mod, but maintains the "Closed" part of the CCV.

Q: Is the new filter head covered by Jeep at all, or is that something I can expect to do on my own?

Seems to depend on the dealer whewther the new filter head is a recall item or if it is optional. Some have gotten it gratis, some not. Just don't let them rape you to put it on, it is connected to the firewall with only 2 bolts.

Here are some threads to check out:

As far as I know, the issue with VAG-COM, Scanguage, and others connecting with our ECU's in the fashion you mention is the design of the bus. Something with how the TCM communicates with the ECU causes a lot of problems if you try to run it continuously plugged in. It will downshift from 5th lockup to 3rd gear and go into limp mode - rather disconcerting at 75 mph. If I understand correctly, the ECU has to be seperately and permanently reprogrammed, similar to a RocketChip or Kerma Tune for the TDI.

Congrats on the purchase, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have mine. You can win some serious cash betting people you have a diesel in your Jeep!

for the 1st 36K on 06's - unless there's an extended warranty

Mopar Parts America was charging ~$100 for head and plug - I think it's gone up a little
but still a reasonable investment - Racor's a good idea too - probably spend a little more but you get better filters.

FYI - on your TDI link - Old Navy was supposed to make a CCV system for us - but it never got manufactured - although a couple of folks are running homemade TDI guy 'Provent' style oil traps

All, thanks for the welcome, and advice!

linewarbr: Thanks for the links. These all seem extremely easy, and prevent a whole lot of trouble in the future. Just the way I like things ;)

I also have a modern vag-com unit and they connect very well to our CRD's using the Generic OBDii mode. One thing that's handy is it can get you the part numbers of your ECM and TCM :SOMBRERO: The last two positions of the part numbers are alpha and they indicate the flash version you have. You should see what you have and compare it to the information the CRD FAQ section (if that's the correct name of it) The data bus on the CRD is cludged together and does not take kindly to being interogated by outside devices  That's what causes scanners to stop working and the TCM going nuts. One problem is the ECM and TCM are both the same device number. Coupled with that there are several different protocols used with out various controllers. GMCTD explained it all very well but recently he's been AOL working on another project :5SHOTS:

As fas as modifing peramerters using VAG-COM no one has reported being able to

The ECM, TCM and BCM (Body Control Module) have all been flashed through the OBD port by dealers. ECM tunes can be preformed through it too just like newer VW's.

The biggie will be when the encryption for the TCM gets broken

Yeah I heard gmctd is on the run from a band of rabid CARB members. He is apparently not allowed inside the borders of the State of California, and was spotted exiting an underground tunnel at the Nevada/ Cali border, where they had posted a lookout for him. Last I heard he had made it into NoCal, and is trying to cross the Cali/ Oregon border through a little-used pass in the Shasta Cascade range.

Here's to gmctd: keeping it real. . . :5SHOTS:
