ANyone have any experience towing trailers with they're liberty? I'm trying to tow my track car with my liberty but think I may be pusing it too hard. The track car stock is like 2700 but its' gutted and is setup like a typical track drag car. The problem is even with that being said the lightest trailer you can get is liek 2000 pounds and then the car. Stock towing limit s 3500 pounds so I'm kinda stuck unless anyone knows something i don't know?

they do fine if you have everything loaded correctly, I towed ~5000# and it did just fine, I know a couple of others have towed about the same with no problems

If you have the 42RLE tranny I wouldn't tow that much, the 45RFE I wouldn't think twice about towing that much since it's a much better tranny. You need to add a AUX tranny cooler, bigger the better, and you should be okay without the HD cooling package, which is not that pricey and hard to install anyways.Don't forget to add 75w-140 full synthetic gear oil in the rear diff and lockout OD.

How can you tell the difference between the two transmissions? I have a liberty sport with the selectable transfercase that does NOT have 4wd full time option. I have a aux trans cooler I will be putting on before I attempt to tow the car. I would think that synthetic gear oil would provide less protection though?

On April 12, 2002, the Liberty was lowered one inch. In 2003, the rear drum brakes were replaced with disc brakes. In mid-2003, the automatic transmission was changed from the 45RFE to the 42RLE. In 2005, Jeep redesigned the front end and added a diesel model. In 2004, a passenger seat airbag sensor was added

I guess that means I have the 42RLE. WHat makes the 42RLE worse than the 45RFE? I just went out and checked I already have a aux trans cooler so I guess I don't have to get another one put on.

The 42RLE started it's life as the A604,a minivan tranny. The 45RFE was put in Dodge Rams with V-8's,even the HEMI,before swapped for the identical 545RFE,which has one more overdrive ratio. That tranny cooler that comes with the 42RLE KJ's is the only tranny cooler and is a standalone cooler,no way to control temp spikes caused by a heavy load on the tranny, like towing. The 45RFE eqipted KJ's have the in-radiator cooler which controls temp spikes since that is what the radiator is ment for.I have the 45RFE and also run a AUX tranny cooler inaddition to the OEM in-radiator cooler that is ment for a 28,000lbs RV.

Ok well for the less fortunate what would you recommend to run two aux coolers? I mean I don't even plan on exceeding the 3500 by that much but I know I will. I guess what is the most someone with a 42RLE has towed?

Towed some with the 3.7 and the tereain really hurts me. I probably wouldnt tow much over 3500lbs, the 3.7 just couldnt handle much more where I live. :?

Is that because of the lack of torque or the transmission just being over worked? I have found some places that say the 42RLE can take 5k and other places that have it listed at 3500 including the owners manual. I don't plan on twoing on anything except paved highway no country here really and the track really ins't that far. It says it's 14 miles and about 26 minutes away.

my latest tow....1990 Audi V8 (~3900 lbs) + 4 doors in the jeep and an extra set of bumpers/supports (heavy). Towed ~85 miles on the highway.

My jeep is a run of the mill Columbia Edition, no tow package or added coolers but an added Draw-Tite hitch and 7 pin wiring.

The rating for the 3.7 with the auto is 5,000.

The rating for the 3.7 with the manual is 3,500.

I have towed several different trailers with my mine (3.7 auto) and if you are going to tow 5,000, try to do it on the flattest route possible. It will handle the weight pretty well until you hit a good incline.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that I wouldn't tow the rated limit for my Jeep, but you definitely should take precautions. If you are going to be towing that amount frequently or on a more difficult route, the a trans cooler would definitly be worth adding. If you are only going to be doing this a couple of times a year, I probably wouldn't.

And do make sure to add 75w-140 to the rear diff.

Tranny was just fine. The engine screams on the hills and hardly keeps up speed. This is with a 3,000+ camper and a ~2500-3k box trailer.. I wouldnt hesitate to tow 5k if I lived where its flat and the trailer has good brakes. Just remember what youre driving and dont get stupid. ohh, and I get around 11mpg at 70mph towing those.

And yes, I realize he hasnt posted in awhile.. Some people actually search old posts before making new ones and more info may help them.

Mine is a '06, 6-Speed Manual. I tow my 16' Smokercraft fishing boat quite a bit with no worries. It weighs about 1,400, + the single axel trailer.

Several times while landscaping I have towed my 5'x8' utility trailer with rock. I know it was 5K + and it towed ok. You can certainly tell you're not pulling a Grasshopper, but still it towed just fine.

I have also towed my Willy's Jeep. I noticed a bit more 'tug' back there especially in corners because of the 4 tires on the ground, but it towed just fine as well.
