When you say "new stuff" what are you refering to? As I recall some Chrysler vehicles called for it as far back as 10 model years ago. Certainly time enough to for problems to surface.

EDIT: Researching this I found Chrysler's LH cars first called for G5 in 98/99. I also found everyone but Chrysler calls it ACID.

Joe, your acid quote is what seeled the deal for me using the regular glycol. Chryslers reputation in the 90s and their financial troubles of today... well I'm not really going to blindly use what the manual says. Aside from the full sythetic oil, id have done that even if it called for normal motor oil, but he whatever. There are many running regualr oil in their crd without issues so whatever, after all its a diesel. With propper maint it will last a very long time.

To each his own, but remember that whenever you change coolant technologies, you're going to loose the benefits of the corrosion inhibitors unless you flush all the internal passages between draining and re-filling. The additives are designed to stick to the passages. Also, you will most definitely loose the extended-drain benefit of HOAT when switching to traditional e-glycol or p-glycol "universal" coolants. It just makes the "proper maintenance" more frequent :)

How the heck would you corrode an engine block with the same green stuff that's been in engines for 100 years?.

because the engines being built today aren't the same as the ones 100 years ago.

ethylene glycol and propylene glycol have different properties in heat transfer and viscosity
and the Acid/Additive is an corrosion inhibitor, and just basic physics - Iron and Aluminum form a galvanic cell & corrode in the presence of water or glycols.

so before you assume the engineers don't have a reason for specifying something - you should at least understand it.

but since you've already changed - you are the experiment - let us know how it goes.

Again.......

HOAT coolant is based off of Ethylene Glycol, virtually about the same and can be mixed. You also can not mix HOAT coolant with OAT coolants(Dexacool,"universal",and "all makes/models" coolants).

Ethylene Glycol(IAT,Inorganic Acid Technology) = High Silicates, need to change every 1-2 years or 30,000miles.

HOAT(Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) = Low Silicates, need to change 3-5 years or 100,000miles.

OAT(Organic Acid Technology) = No Silicates, need to change 3-5 years(actually about 2 when it turns to sludge and eats your gaskets) or 100,000miles.

How about that propylene glycol that is biodegradable, good for 7yrs and requires no special disposal costs and its low toxicity little threat to children, pets or wildlife. If it wasn't so pricey it would be great :!:

Not compatible with cooling systems speced for HOAT coolant,I could not find one for Chrysler but Ford(who specs HOAT coolant also) has a TSB about that junk.

LOL, I know I'm the experiment, but if I report back in 2 years that everything is fine and dandy, will everyone make the switch with confidence? I Doubt it.
To each is own. It's a passionate bunch. It seems that when it comes to any kind of fluid added to our vehicles you will get a wide range of opinions on any of them from oil, trans, rear end, antifreeze, etc. Knowledgeable bunch of guys here and I enjoy reading the threads that come with it as I have learned a lot from the LOST board.

I don't know where to find the specs - but that looks right

Okay the Zerox web - PDF has the same specs (although it won't paste) so
http://www.valvoline.com/products/brands/zerex/antifreeze/42
and click on the PDF - same Chrysler/Ford specs

Valvoline products are available in the UK but not the antifreeze mentioned above a couple of times.

Well then get what Mercedes uses. According to the Zerex site they use the same thing. :pepper:

I was just reading a MB site and the same argument is going on there. G-5 is recommended for MB going way back in years.

In the US if anyone can't find it go to NAPA and ask. If they don't have it then they can order it for you. It seems some NAPA stores have it "in the back" :SOMBRERO:
