Now that the Fudged Computer Models (including Weather Satellite Data from the !800s) that were forced into predicting global warming are being proven wrong. We are heading into a Mini Ice Age that will last 20 to 30 years.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ ... -here.html

My plan of action:
1) Insulate my house better.
2) Wear warmer clothes (hope the fashion designers catch on so our sweethearts still look good [ Sorry, Berkkas not an option]).
3) Cram the biggest battery I can into my CRD

My contacts at the Illuminati headquarters (who as we all know are actually Reptilians from the planet Nibiru) concur with your assessment, as we will all be frozen until there are only 500 million of us left. It won't get really cold until 2012.

Fortunately my underground bunker is well insulated and stocked with 1 year's supply of fine Chef Boyardee products.

Actually I do want to insulate my house too. It's been really drafty this year. We freeze our butts off even when the thermostat says 71. Maybe I should get another thermostat to check its accuracy.../shrug.

I tore my carpet and pad out a couple years ago and refinished the original wood floors. They look great but feel like ice, and air comes in here and there at cracks.

Anyone ever insulated your floor above your crawlspace? I think it would help a ton. We blew in a foot of insulation into our cieling / roof a year ago, but its still cold. I just worry about moisture and if our crawlspace will get too cold and freeze pipes more readily.

If we save energy, we can lessen our carbon footprints!

I just don't want to freeze my butt off every night.

Careful with that... the previous owner did that to the house I bought, insulation and vapor-barrier under the floor in my partial dug-out crawlspace/basement. It was separating two "conditioned spaces", which is bad, and it became a moisture trap. The insulation was wet, puddles in the plastic. It was gross. I ripped it all out.

I believe the proper way if your crawlspace/basement is "conditioned space" - i.e. heated in the winter (you have pipes that could freeze etc), then you want to insulate around the perimeter of your foundation to keep the crawlspace warmer.

If the crawlspace is not "conditioned", you want to insulate the floor/plumbing, and then ventilate the crawlspace so moisture can escape and it stays the same temperature as outside.

Sealing up any drafty spots can help a lot too. We have an addition which is one room downstairs and one room up, and is exposed on 3 sides. It's fine most of the time but if it's cold and windy, the temps start dropping. It has a bay window that is junk, I've sealed it up the best I can but it really needs to be replaced.

Dave

Checking your windows will probably show you fairly quickly which ones need the most work. For a quick fix (tho not aesthetically pretty) Lowes sells big rolls of Aluminum Bubble Wrap. This stuff is AMAZING as an insulator. On my RV, I cut it to just slightly larger than the inside frame of the window and push it in against the glass. I did this a few weeks ago after REALLY being cold (when the thermostat said 73... BS!) and almost overnight the temp inside stabilized. Obviously that window is leaking air and heat something fierce.

This is an RV, so there isn't a whole lot I can do to insulate the underside, but on a house... If you put this bubble wrap on all the exterior basement walls with a 1/2" air gap... It is supposed to have an R-value in the 30s. Best part yet is that unlike the pink fiberglass that needs 5 inches + to really insulate... This stuff can do it in 3/4 of an inch, INCLUDING the air gap! Keep your interior space for you.

An infrared thermometer will probably be the cheapest tool to find exactly where your house needs the insulation / sealing, but IIRC from a tool show on TLC, there is an infrared camera system that home energy inspectors use that might be able to be rented. It shows you a very-pretty-color image of whatever it is pointed at... And anything that shows up as bright blue on that... There's your outside air leak making it cold.

OK, I will need to put a better seal around the front door at the bottom. I can put an extra layer of window inside the glass on the back door that frosts up.
But no way is my Wife wearing a Berkka :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
