Ok, several of you have replaced your OEM roof rails with aftermarket racks. How did you take apart the black plastic pieces at the ends of the roof rails (as seen in the photo below)?


At a glance, I haven't found anything yet and would like to know before I take them off (since I don't have the best of luck with hidden fasteners) sometime in the next 2-3 weeks.

use a prying tool to get the piece to pop up enough to get your fingers under it and then just pull up...there are only 2 fasteners that hold them in if i recall correct...not hard at all...

If you are looking to add crossbars etc.you have the correct OEM side rails already on your vehicle.
The rails that are usually replaced are the type that fit flush to the roof.

Hope this helps. It is actually quite easy to remove them. You can give it quite a bit of muscle without having to worry about damaging anything.

Just pry up in the back side where the rail goes in to the cover

Yep, to hold me over until Boiler has his rack for the KK, I'm installing RRO adventure rack. Needed something to help haul more stuff before going to Moab in April.

I just installed the factory style roof rails. There must a strip that goes into the channel between the mounting brackets to cover up the weld marks? The rack rails I purchase did not include anything like that. I would like to find those if they are available.

best place to find something like that is the dealership. if it were me i would pry just leave it since its on top of the jeep and i cant see it or paint bedliner in the channel.
