EGR Cutout at the Exhaust Manifold

Has anyone done this?
Just cannot bring myself to bring this into the Stealership to have the EGR pipe replaced.
I would rather buy a new turbo, get the ECU tuned up than replace this pipe.
But both, aaahhhhhh!

I seem to recall that someone on here (patracy) simply blocked off the manifold hole with a bolt and washer (during a EGT probe install). He reused the existing clamp and inserted the block in the hole and tightened the clamp back up = blocked off EGR pipe. I don't know what the effect was downstream at the EGR and possible code generation. You can see how he did it here:

You are the man! Thanks again.
You have come up with 3 excellent responses to queries in this matter.
I also must thank Sam for his parts and service manual. The parts numbers off the 06 list did not work so I asked moparpartsamerica.com but have not received a response yet.
I keep on thinking that something is missing to complete this repair, probably when I figure it out it will get done.
If only I had small hands, no belly and sharp eyes.

Still think the new turbo and a manifold plug would be the best setup.
What kind of metal could withstand the manifold heat?
Just a regular bolt and washer? I doubt, it but not sure.
What do you think?

CRDMiller blocked off his EGR. May want to hit him up to see how he did it.

However, being the ower of a GDE-tuned CRD, I would strongly suggest minimizing the $$ invested in replacing the EGR and maximizing the $$ spent in making it ineffective. If you are going to modify it to disable it, just make sure you don't disable it with it open. . .

Just got this from Keith at GDE:

"There is no eminent harm in blocking off the EGR at the exhaust manifold, it would be cheaper than the new pipe. If you decide on a tune in the future the CEL will be turned off for the EGR code caused by blocking it off.

Just one word of caution, with our tunes we still use the EGR valve for a certain situation to prolong the life of the turbocharger. After a hard acceleration and then pedal release at cruising speed, we will open the EGR valve for about a ½ second to bleed off the residual boost in the intake as this reduces the stresses on the compressor wheel. In this situation the EGR circuit is flowing in the opposite direction (from intake toward exhaust). If you block off the EGR, this feature will not function for you, but in the end it is not a big deal. Let me know if we can be of further assistance."

I think I will go for a block and a tune although I am still tempted to do the turbo swap now.
The Jeep can sit a while longer until I get the block and ship the ECU or scrape up the extra cash for the new turbo.
My kids say I have more waffles than the House of Waffles. Who rushes quality anyhow???
Also, want to install a turbo pressure and a trans temp gauges.
