I noticed some rust on my stock rock rails on my KJ. So today I removed them, cleaned them up, and sanded them. I would like to paint them with a textured, black rust-oleum.

Question is: Should I use a primer on the rock rails before I paint them with rust-oleum?

I use Rustoleum Heavy Metal primer before I paint, then top coat with Rustoleum of my choice. The primer helps prevent future rust and helps adhesion.

x4. Regardless of what you're painting, primer makes any finish coat adhere better. It's never really required, but will almost always give you a better result (including cars, walls, wood trim, etc.).

I would definately primer them. and if you really want them to last, throw on a coat of bedliner between primer and paint.

If you are using the Rustoleum hammered paint it says you dont need primer if I remember correctly. I always put a real quick thin coat of primer on though just to add an extra coat of protection. The rustoleum hammered paint is really tough and I recommend it.

I use the rustoleum rust something or other, it's a flat primer, it's what i use to touch up my rear bumper when i scuff it, or repaint the diff cover, or skids or underbody
