The excess oil will seek the path of least resistance. In this case, that would be (hopefully) the Crank Case Vent, on top of the engine. In our Jeeps it is about the size of a hockey puck on the left rear of the engine if you are facing it with the hood open. Not sure what the orientation of the CCV would be in your buddy's minivan. I wouldn't think it is the front main seal, or there would be more than a few drops after a long run. Hope this helps, let us know what he finds - and pics would be helpful too.
