Then it sounds like you are OK. I, however, am in the 1/4 to 3/8 group, and am looking at getting a new thermostat.

RTStabler51,

I have also experienced a decline in temp reading on my gauge, and that is confirmed because I find I need to turn the temp dial on the cabin heater about 20 to 30 degrees more clockwise than I used to in order to get comparable cabin heat.

The question: can you see in the thermostat the valve mechanism and the parts that move the valve to respond to temp? What I am wondering is there anyway to strategically bend the bimetallic strip and/or spring, to overcome the tendency to open too soon?

One thing i notice in your picture is that the inside looks very clean so it doesn't appear that crud has built up and altered the mechanism.

Thanks RTStabler51 and GDE for the pic and info. Heres my rendering of GDE's pic where my needle sits most of the time when warmed up and going down the hwy at ~60 mph:

That's exactly where mine sat...

Mine sits just a smidge higher than that, but no-where near the 176 mark (and it hasn't for some time). Is there an OBD-II reading to pull the actual temp from the coolant temperature guage? I'd be interested to see what the actual numbers say and remove the chance of error from the guess-work on the gauges.

At normal operating temps (not towing or anything), it should be around 200 or so, right (as the t-stat starts opening at 176)?

Dan

With it installed, there is no way to see any of the parts opening or closing. My coolant and thermostat are both very clean. I think it just plain ol' got wore out. I have about 50k on my coolant, as I had it flushed at approximately 28k due to some gunk build up from the original stuff.

Anybody know if the thermostat has been updated or revised from it's first issue, have the part numbers changed, or is there a TSB on it?

BY the way, Good work RTStabler1

I am thinking I would not want to mess with it to try to get it to open later as a small adjustment might have you overheating. Also It could be a wax pellet based design similar to my corvettes, but can't find any source to confirm that. On those designs the wax heats and pushes the thermostat open as it expands. Possibly it could be modified in the same way. I don't know.

Here is info on modifying the Corvette wax thermostat:

Can one of you guys who has replaced your thermostat check your coolant temperature with a Scangauge or similar? I'd like to know what the engine runs at with a brand new thermostat.

kapalczynski - I was of the same thinking, but finally got off my butt and fixed and a viola! Temp gauge just under 1/2 now!

I'll dig it out of the trash and take a couple of pictures of it.

I'll buy it from you for $10, not kidding. I am curious to find a similar one for cheaper if it is available as I used to work in the parts business and thermostats are all really similar usually. It would give me something to compare to w/o disassembling my jeep.

PM me your address.

Thanks for the thermostat man :)

Got your old thermostat yesterday in the mail.
