I'm interested in getting started in doing a little transesterification in the near future and am debating the merits of different materials, reactor designs, etc. I thought, "Where better to get some input than from jeep-folks." Who on the board brews their own Bio-D and what type of reactor (GL/Appleseed/Apple Turnover, etc) do you use? Pictures would be great, too.

I'm leaning towards doing a GL Eco design with an electric water heater flipped over for the dewatering/reaction vessel (apple-turnover stlye).

I am intrested too.... I think I have a source of used oil but I know nothing about the design of equipment to do it with. I don't have a garage or out building to do it in either but I have plenty of room in my basement I just don't know if that is safe.

No you don't want to set up a processor in your basement. A portable shed would be good.

Here a a few good links:

How to Make Biodiesel - http://www.make-biodiesel.org/

Some good links on the bottom of the home page here even info on the Apple Turnover.

another good sorce:

Utah Biodiesel Supply - Biodiesel Homebrewing Supplies, Equipment, Processors and Information http://utahbiodieselsupply.com/

I hope this helps 8)

I have made about 4,000 gallons in the past three years in an appleseed clone. Its a homemade 40 gallon SS tank with a very serious stirrer in it.

Absolutely everything you need to know can be found here: http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=cfrm&s=447609751

I would only add CBT's website to the aforementioned as being the "clearing house" for BioD info. It also has all the photos/diagrams/parts list for building your own processor, as well as safe practice guidelines.

I have been homebrewing for a year and 1/2 now. appleseed clone with a dry wash system (Ion exchange system). the dry wash system adds about 10cents a gallon to the production cost but it is well worth it, it takes a lot of the labor and waste out of the process. If anybody wants pictures I will be happy to take detailed photos and share.

I sprung for the biopro 190 a little over 2 years ago. Made about 2500 gallons last year fueling family and a friend, as well as heating the a buddy's house in winter. Great system. Reduces the amount of time involved. Put in the oil and chemicals, push a button and walk away.

Did you build your own drywash system? I've been thinking about the idea.

What do you guys do with the glycerin? I found a local pig farmer who has a biogas digester. I take mine over to him and turn it into electricity and fertilizer.

Congrats on your intrest in biodiesel.
There are three of us CRD owners that use biodiesel and communicate regularly. Two of us are processors here in NY the other just buys biodiesel at the pump in FL. The CRD's run great on it. I would suggest you start small or find another processor in your area to work with.(keep it simple) I have a number of diesel engines and a furnace to burn biodiesel in so it makes sense to process it myself. We have many back yard processors and a few larger operations around. We have been doing presentations with a non for profit for a number of years on how to make biodiesel. We are now trying to get local farmers to grow oilseed crops so we can have a greater supply of vegetable oil.
Oilseed crops are a renewable resource that can be produced on marginal land or used in crop rotations to produce a food grade vegetable oil to be used in restaurants with a contract to return the WVO to be made into biodiesel. Oh, as noted don't set up in the basement.

Lame, I didn't realize this was in the diesel section and thought this was going to be about beer.

I will leave you to your diesel talk that is way above my comprehension level

Well you can distill ethanol to use in the process. But I don't think you would want to drink it. It's about 120 proof. :grim:

I have been brewing my own BioDiesel now for almost 5 years, and 4,000 gallons. I run both of my Jetta TDI's, Cummins 12V, Kubota, and I am looking (very hard) at buying a Liberty Diesel. All of mine have run great on the Bio that I produce, and have run both Jetta's over 100,000 miles on it, the Cummins 194,000, and the Kubota 1115 hrs. on it.
I would really love to purchase a Liberty Diesel for my wife, but haven't as of yet been able to find one.
I process my Bio, then to purify it, I have built a "Cold Evaporation System." It is even better than Ion dry washing, because no reson is used. the cold evaporation system evaporates all the Methonal, and without methonal in the solution, the soaps and junk don't have anything to "hold" on to, so it all drops out leaving PURE, CLEAN, BEAUTIFUL Bio in 48 hrs. I would be more than happy to help anyone with making Bio if interrested, just let me know.
As far as the Liberty that I am looking for, if anyone knows of one that is for sale, please let me know. I live in Wayland, Michigan, about 10 minutes south of Grand Rapids. :JEEPIN:

Did you find a Jeep Liberty CRD?
Have you had any experience with trash pumps for collecting WVO?

I have an SVO converted Liberty. 20k miles of grease and counting fast. I have 200 gallon tank of triple filtered SVO. To me that is easy. Coverting was easy once I figured out where to put the spare tank.

Now setting up a biodiesel processor is hard. I have 30 feet of pipe and the ability to cut it. I have atleast 10 ball valves maybe 15. I have I one way valve. I have 140 gallons of methonal and 30 pounds of KaOH. I have two water heater-- One 40 gallon and one 50 gallon. I have a good fryer filter pump and a clear water pump. I was think about doing an upsidedown water heater in the GL style. But his pictures are vag and his drawings are full of errors. I am not really sure where to start.

Anybody has good pictures they would like to send PM me.

Setting up a biodiesel processor is easy. :SOMBRERO:
When running biodiesel there is less chance of spilling WVO inside your CRD.
Find some people in your area that are already doing biodiesel. Once you have seen a set up it makes more sense. There is a lot of great info out there. Some one is always selling a processor already set up. They will usually help move it to your place and some times help set it up. I just helped move one. The seller is upgrading to a larger system. Having cold WVO in your injector pump can get expensive.

Obviusly you have not seen my sytem. My tank is mounted where the spare tire goes. And I have a pump in the back yard it is like pulling up to the Texaco. If you are trying to say Biodiesel is better for the diesel pump then veg-oil think about this I wash all of the veg out of my pump every time I stop. If you are running bio it sits in your pump all night long...

The local Bosch repair company loves Bio he said his business is booming since Bio became more popular. He says he sees it on the inside of the pump. I am will to take the risk on both counts. Ideally Bio-diesel start and SVO for the long drive. Then Bio-diesel for the rinse.

I think I am going to do a GL set-up maybe on my next day off. I also have a 100 gallon cone bottom tank. I think I will mix it in my 40 gallon waterheater then water wash and drain like the GL system then let it settle extra time in the 100 galllon Cone bottom tank. Then I might right it in the Centrifuge to see what it looks like. That is my plan anyway. I will keep you posted.

Yes, that is correct. I haven't seen your set up. Perhaps you can post some photos. 8) Putting the tank where the spare tire goes sounds like a good idea. How do you open the tailgate? I have to open mine daily.
As for your injector pump repairman, well. One that's been around here the longest and works on all brands of pumps says a pump break down with WVO is a real mess. The lubricity in biodiesel is a good thing. But as you know biodiesel needs to meet specs (washed etc.) The specs for producing biodiesel for over the road (US retail) are stricter than the requirements for dino diesel. :SOMBRERO:
A friend who cleans WVO and sells over 10 million gal. a year for heating and vegie cars and trucks. Tells me you will save a lot on fuel cost, but its a matter of time before you vehicle will break down. He has set up a lot of grease cars and trucks some for commercial use including his own.
I think you can screw any fuel up it you don't pay attention. We have even got some bad dino diesel in our tractors. You don't hear much about microbial growth or algae in dino diesel but it happens.

I am beginning the accumulation process to build a processor myself. I found alot of useful information here on the process as well as processors here:

http://www.journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_make.html

The writer seemed to explain the information in a way that I understood it and there are quite a few good pictures of processors which are helpful to those of us who have trouble visualizing what it should look like.

Good Luck!

Just like Biodiesel I can not figure out how to post pictures. I can make biodiesel in a bucket. I just have not figured out how to build a processor. Maybe tommorow.

As for the rear door the factory tire and mount are very heavy I removed both of those and there is now a round aluminum tank there. Whit the tank full 24 gallons give or take a little the door opens and closes uneventfully. My wife likes to open slowly and close slowly she pushes the door closed and just gives it a little shove at the end and itdoes not even slosh the veg oil.

As for the saving money my wife took a job further away from home for more money because she knew she was getting 150 miles on every gallon of diesel she purchased. She saves so much money on fuel it pays for the fuel and the car. Her last car got 30 mpg on her trip to work and did not have as much space.

I have not been to Journey to Forever in a few years I will try it again. I started doing grease in 2000 when diesel was $1.399 per gallon.

Hi SLS,
No, I have not found a Jeep Liberty CRD as of yet. Still looking.
I have never used a trash pump for collecting WVO. I work with a guy that owns 2 restaraunts, and he brings in the oil for me to work.
Do you have a lead a a Libby for me ? :BINGO:
