Meh, timing belt just needs to be changed once every 100k miles. Not really that big of a deal.

Agreed, I was going to make a similar comment that you will be hard pressed to find a small diesel using a chain these days. Although they need regular maintenace belts are simply superior for this application. Belt technology is also improving and I believe some are even speced to last the lifetime of the engine.
