Ive had this jerry can sitting in the back of my jeep for the last month since I got it from a buddy for my birthday. I wasn't sure how I was going to go about mounting it until I decided to put my tire on my roof rack and use the existing bolts to mount my can. It turned out pretty well I think...

Image
Used a drill press in my garage to put the holes through the 1/8" steel plate I cut to fit

Image
I used 2 washers per bolt and 1 rubber grommet per bolt to keep it away from the body and paint of the jeep, no un-necessary scratches here!

Image
Here it is all bolted together, just needs some Truck bed liner paint!

Image
Painted and ready to mount

Image
Heres the finished product, I just need something stronger than the bungee cord to keep it still!

Let me know what you guys think! Its my first fabrication besides the roof rails so go easy! :JEEPIN:

Yes better tie downs otherwise it kinda flops around alot, the back of the KJ isn't exactly straight either, it kinda curves down.

I also recommend a lockable tie down. These tend to grow legs...

Anyone ever try to add one of these while keeping the spare tire on? Either a bracket that could mount it next to the tire or in front of the tire?

Before you do, I'd take your tire off and open and close the tailgate a few times. Then open and close it a few times with the tire on. Then consider an additional 40 lbs of can on there.

Personally I wouldn't want to overload the tailgate any more than I already am with my Duratrac on it.

Yeah i kinda figured that...
Hummm thinking about another swing out gate that holds the jerry can would be cool.
Just to the right of the spare tire and swings the opposite way, too bad the bumper is plastic..

Its not real pretty, had some steel laying around. If it holds up in Moab next week I will make a new one that looks better.

This is the only other pic I have. It has changed a little, It has a large wing nut I made that through bolts into the bumper. Since the bumper is all plastic I made a bracket that bolts to the skid plate bolts and bends around and behind the bumper with a nut welded to it. I can take more pics but it's not installed right now. If you want I can post some more pics When I reinstall it next weekend.

And if you are thinking something more expensive, but very nicely done...

I like the setup, but the tire blocks the tail light. I tried to move my tire up to put a jerry can on my carrier and I ditched the idea because I want a real clear view of the tail lights. In defense of this design though, the tail light should still be visible from the driver's seat of a car behind you. I finally just decided that I will either come up with a roof system for the Jerry cans and/or mount a smaller can on the tire carrier somewhere. Maybe put a water can on top and a small fuel can on the carrier.

Oh and I guess I should point out that this is Marty's rear bumper/tire carrier system on his Rock Lizard Fabrications web site. He is currently not producing these. Not sure when/if he will start back. I will say that I have built my own rear bumper/tire carrier and I like this one better (other than the visibility of the tail light).

Other than looks cools, why would you need extra gas in America?

If I did this, I'd be tempted to leave it as is. Let the thieves fill their tank with some good ol' D2 and see how far they get :-)r
