Not sure how many read OVERLAND JOURNAL but its a great magazine that I receive.
In the 2010 Annual Gear Guide they did a test of 4 different tires and the fuel mileage.
These guys do a great job of doing unbiased reporting.
here are the results
All 4 were size LT255-85-R16
tire size, weight with rim, corrected fuel economy
Cooper ST, 75 lbs, 18.75 mpg
Maxxis Bighorn, 82 lbs, 18.81 mpg
Treadwright Guard Dog, 87 lbs, 17.04 mpg
Richard Cepek Fun Country II, 83 lb, 18.18 mpg

Shows what just a few more lbs of tire weight can do to mileage.
These tests were done on a FJ cruiser on TRD aluminum wheels.

Just thought it was interesting

1mpg for a 4 lb difference and then .6 mpg for a 7lb difference?

I'd agree weight does affect it, but I'm thinking the TW tread design has a bit to do with it as well

would have liked to see the guarddog vs MTR and to have any 'correct' science behind it that's what should have been done, even taking say one of those tires in C D and E would have been more appropriate

That is interesting that the TW retread mileage is quite a bit less for being only 7 pounds more than the Bighorn.

and the ST has less mpg .. 7lbs LIGHTER

they should have done the test with a tire size, or tire types that were avail in enough load ranges where weight differed enough to properly do the test

test is showing more of rolling resistance due to tread design imo.

This was a test done with the tires available to them at the time. It was NOT one of those tire tests in JP where a manufacturer gives them a ton of tires to test each available one.

Guess I should of kept the article to myself

Yeah, tire weight is huge when talking about MPG...

Thanks Tom :D

And performance. Every pound of unsprung weight is said to be worth at least 10 punds of suspended weight in acceleration, at least.
