Agree with the "peace of mind" part. Working at Freightliner and seeing what Detroit, Cat, Cummins, and Mercedes recommended for their engines, 0W40 just didn't sit well with me, no matter what the owners manual said. That's the main reason I changed at only 900 miles.

Turns out to have been a good thing in my case. There was all kinds of leftover casting sand and debris sitting in the bottom of the oil sump. Also looks like there's a bunch of this crap in the cooling system as well. Service dept said the cooling system didn't need to be flushed. My friend and I compared our CRD's side by side down in Texas. His coolant reservoir was spotless at 20 K miles, mine had an entire compartment filled with what looks like black sand and a layer sitting on the bottom of the other compartments at 5000 miles.

Mine's due now for the 6000 mile service. When i take it in, I'm going to tell them I want that blasted reservoir and the cooling system flushed out.

IMHO, it might not be a bad idea to change out after the first 1000 miles, no matter what oil or oil filter you use, just to make sure all the casting debris is flushed out of the system. Especially if you look at your cooling system reservoir and see what looks like sand or sediment accumulating in it.

I seem to remember there was a service notice that any CRD with the gunky or crap in the coolant that was visiable was to be changed out and also given an oil change. I read the darn thing about 4 months ago and don't remember for sure, but I believe it was for all '05 models built or built before middle of July or sometime around then. It wasn't a TSB but just a service notice and probably missed or just ignored by most dealerships unless owners complain. I do remember checking the coolant bottle before I bought the CRD and noticed it clean and not contaminated with anything.

Yep, mine was built in May, so it fits the bill.

At least I got the oil changed and saved myself some potential grief down the road. I lucked into that one.

Having the crap in the cooling system ain't good, but better than having it in the oil sump!

My first oil change (at 5,707 miles) produced some NASTY oil, too. I'm nearing 11,400 so it will be time again soon.....this time w/Rotella-T 5W40. With EGR and multiple injection events, today's diesels get oil black fast. My 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 w/305-555 CTD is much cleaner even at 8k oil change intervals.

Yup that's why they have upgraded (or got new oils) the diesel oil for the EGR equipped diesels. It holds the soot in the oil better and sure makes a mess when changing, that's why I have got with Greg for the Fumoto oil drain valve group buy. Our VW's and my MB was EGR equipped and the same way, just glad I didn't have to do it more then every 10,000 miles.

I use Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel oil, same as I use in my Powerstroke and John Deere 990. It's got very high detergency and can hold a lot of soot in suspension while not allowing it to clump into particles big enough to cause wear. It's also a CI4+ rated oil, vs the CF rating of the Mobil 1 0W-40. I am considering installing an Amsoil remote dual bypass filter setup if I can find space for it on the CRD. That, coupled with the Series 3000 HDD should really control the soot, which I think is the main cause of the EGR issues. Also, the volatility of the Series 3000 HDD is very low, which should greatly minimize the amount of oil vapor finding its way into the intake system. Anybody out there have a bypass setup on their CRD yet? If so, any pics?

Powersmoke!!!

What are you aiming for 50,000 oil changes, or more? If ours was a high mileage vehicle I would do the same thing, however our CRD is only going to be doing about 15,000 mile a year, so with just normal 10k mile oil changes and using synthetic fiber filter CRD should easy last 20 years. Wonder how the rest of the vehicle will do during that time?

I read thru this post and I didnt see to much about the TOPIC. What are you guys & gals using for an oil filter. Are you using the mopar brand being bought at the dealer or are you using another brand ie: wix, napa fram etc... and from where is the best place to buy. I was quoted 17.50 per filter at my dealer today, that seems awful expensive for a filter. I was paying that for filters on my PSD Super Duty....

Actually, it's M1-211. Also Purolator L 25230 and PL 25230.

Hey Walt, how did you come up with that part number? (i.e. a mobil 1 M1-211 for a CRD) When I call my local autozone they start questioning me (like they don't want to sell me one) and say it's not in their database for a CRD. Before I tell them "look just order it" I thought I'd get some more info. Is the M1-211 the same size as the OEM oil filter? Any issues fitting?

Thanks.

I've been using these oil filters, and they work well. For some reason, Auto Zone does not stock them and cannot order them. They can be ordered through the internet from AutoBarn, but I'd recommend ordering 5 minimum, the shipping is very high if you just order one.

Old Navy, I'm aware that the oil was still good at 2000 miles. It give me more peace of mind when I do early oil changes. Even though it's probably not necessary now days, I still always do the first oil change early. I'll be putting this CRD on regular 3000 mile oil changes AND using full synthetic.

As for your comment that I wasted alot of money....I really hope you don't consider $28.00 alot of money. I don't think anyone could argue that FRESH oil is not better on an engine so if i want to change it every 1000 miles I will...

I will actually argue that fresh oil is NOT better for an engine. :)

Many studies have been done in where they show that the wear of a motor drops with the age of oil to a point. Changing more frequent than nessecary can actually induce more wear. Also you have more dry starts from more oil changes, something that does a decent amount of wear as well.

Just some food for thought...

I just checked Auto Barn and they have them available. For some reason, Auto Barn does not give the filter number, but the Mobil 1 filter for the 2.8 L diesel Liberty is an M1-211. They have a message box you can use when ordering these, and I'd recommend having them contact you if it is not an M1-211. The cost is $11.95 each, (shipping NOT included) and on one filter, the shipping is a killer. If you order 5, the shipping is about the same, and this cuts the shipping cost per filter to a reasonable level. These filters are an exact replacement for the original.

The only problem I've had with changing oil on the Libby is that when I unscrew the filter, the oil leaks down a hollow rib on the skid plate and drips out from some drain holes in the skid plate. I tried using a rag to plug the rib hole, but this didn't work. I'm going to try a formed piece of sheet metal to divert the drip from the filter to my drain pan, which should solve the problem.

I called autobarn.com and they said they didn't stock a Mobil M1-211. They gave me Mobil's support number; called Mobil and they said they don't sell an M1-211.

So unless someone can provide a better source or part number for Mobil filters, Mobil doesn't make an oil filter for our CRD's.
