Just bought a Limited CRD one week ago. Took our first trip of about 300 miles from Baltimore to Ocean City, Maryland. On open highway driving at about 65 MPH we were getting about 29 MPG. The total trip which included stop and go driving in and around Ocean City was 27 MPG. I'm pleased as this is with the car not even broken in yet. I am finding I like the CRD more and more. I have not encountered any problems with the car, and it's power and performance are great.

Otty, is the overhead computer that states your milage correct? Ours seems WAY OFF.

I haven't done a manual check, just being lazy and watching the overhead computer. I guess I'd better check the accuracy of the overhead computer before I start assuming what my mileage is. I'll sure be dissapointed if it isn't accurate.

I was just wondering because it seems that I'm getting two different readings. One from the computer and one from the odometer.

I would say the general response would be those numbers are not likely. I've heard some outrageous numbers, and I just don't believe them. The best I've ever seen on the highway is around 24.6, and that's a real calculation over a period of time. ANY stop and go depletes those numbers. If I do a lot of city driving, I get around 19. If I do a lot of hwy driving with some city mixed in, I'll get around 22.5. The computer is frequently wrong. I tracked all my diesel purchases and calculate everything out at 3K miles, and had 19 mpg. It's gotten some better, but I can't see a fully loaded limited getting what the sitcker says.

BTW, it's still about 5 -6 mpg better than either of my 3.7liter Libby's, so I'm not complaining. I love my CRD.

It's taken me a while to update, but I just refueled my CRD since the trip I described in starting this thread. I reset both my dashboard trip odometer and the trip odometer in the computer display, and I reset my mileage display the last time I refueled. I drove 70% non highway and 30% highway with most of the trips being short (under 15 miles). My mileage on the computer was 22.0 and my calculated mileage (266.8 miles divided by 12.16 gallons) was 21.94 miles to the gallon. The computer seems pretty accurate to me (at least on this trip). The next time I take a trip where I am doing all highway driving I will check again to see whether the accuracy holds up on higher mileage trips.

We just bought our CRD about 4 weeks ago. We took a trip last weekend on TX county and state hwys. Speeds averaged 45-65 mph, and we drove through 4 small towns, each with several stop lights. Our 200 mile trip average was 27.9. This with about 700 miles on the motor. I did have a couple of ounces of Lucas Diesel fuel additive added to the tank, and don't know if it makes a difference mileage wise. It ticked of my wife, because she drove the return and was only able to get 25.5 mpg. I confirmed the numbers by filling the tank at our start and stop points. The key to getting the high mpg is to let the tranny shift as early as possible. When going up hills, use moderate throttle to avoid a downshift, and let the torque do it's stuff at low rpm. BillS

My last tank calculated to 26 mpg. That was using little AC, towing a trailer briefly, and a couple of hard accelerations, but otherwise driving conservatively and obeying posted speed limits. SO, I can see how upper 20s would certainly be possible on these CRDs purely on the highway.

However, in town I've seen low 20s and my all-time worst so far was 20.5 mpg on a tank while towing. My consistent average in mixed driving, manually calculated, has been around 23.5 miles per gallon. So I still am a little reluctant to believe that someone could be AVERAGING upper 20s in a Jeep.

Still, no matter how you look at it my CRD is saving me $83 per month on fuel alone over my wife's 3.7L V6 model.
