Hello again:

so my upper ball joints have failed on the passenger side, and the driver side is soon to be going from what the mecahnic has told me the other day.

i have found out that you can not just buy the upper ball joint, the ball joint is cast in to the upper control arm. so i assume i have to buy the whole upper control arm all together. is this right?

with that being said, i have been reading on here about everyone using jeepinbyAl's Upper control arm... generation 3.5? or 4.5?

is it worth it? i assume the rockyroad outfitters are a bad way to go, i think they are known as insane arms... no one talks about them...

I have a 2003 liberty sport with a 2inch BDS suspension lift. I have Rancho's in the front as well

anyone have any suggestions?

and how are they holding up? i have about 110,000 miles on the kj now, and it seems like EVERYTHING is falling apart within the last month

thanks everyone. and sorry for the generic terms, i am a newbie on this, and all this mechanical stuff is still very new

josh

JBA's arms are great
I have the 4.5s and no problems, been on for 45,000 or more now, just keep them greased ( like any grease fitting should be)
Ask Stumpjumper about the RRO arms
( he returned them and got JBA's )

and how hard are they to replace? i assume you have to take out the battery tray and air filter just to get to the bolt

absolutely

toms got like 45k on his, i'm closing in on him at 25k+

my alignment is back in stock specs, and if a joint were to start to fail, it will cost about 10 bucks to replace both but so far, tight as a tack, just have to keep them greasy

My stockers are tight after 98K miles, no maintenance required and no alignment issues and I wheel all the time.

Yes, I have the JBA arms now. It rides the same as the stock arms, but the ball joint angle looks much better! No problems with alignment. I also make sure to grease the joints at every oil change now. 8)

I think there's also a recall on upper ball joints, so maybe you can get it replaced for free

Recall was on lowers, not uppers.

Mine got called in for that recall about two years ago, I was looking at the computer printout of the work done just the other day, and it states that the dealer replaced the upper ball joints, so either it was for the uppers, or my dealer screwed up and I have new uppers I didn't need, and I'm riding on bad lowers......or they printed the sheet up wrong..... :|

Correction: Recall was on lowers, AND uppers (for 02-03's in salt belt states).

i was at the local dealer today and had them pull recalls for my VIN and it didnt show anything for the uppers..... then the guy looked up the recall and it was for 02 and 03's.... guess my 03 renegade didnt fall into some criteria to get the recall. it woulda been nice since i found out within the last week or so that my driver side upper is shot and the passenger side isnt too far behind. at least new factory ones woulda bought me some time to get the JBA's. now i gotta hurry up and find the cash somewhere to get a pair so i can get back on the road..... moms mini cooper convertible is an ideal summertime car.... just not for me........

Is it just me or does that look very bad? Hope everyone was ok. No problems here with the joints yet...115k on them so far and it is a 2002. My wife jokes how my KJ is always making noises, lol. I say, my KJ is perfect :) *as I pull out a plasma cutter and start cutting more* hehehe :frankie:

Yes, luckily everyone was OK! I had my 1 year old son in the back when this happened. I was at a stop sign turning left onto the highway you can see in the background. I pulled out in front of a car coming from my right. (Under normal circumstances I would have had enough time to get up to speed before he caught up to me.) The tire folded over just as I was crossing the centerline of the highway, and I had to hit the gas and slide onto the shoulder before the oncoming car came! I had no idea what just happened, and my jaw dropped when I got out of my Jeep! I can't imagine what would have happened if I was going 60 mph instead of 15 mph.
