Please....

Anyway.... diesel owners don't track "gas mileage"..... since they're diesels.

Has any one done the math on the CRD option plus the mods that most CRD owners ,ust perform for "normal operation" to get the break-even point for the diesel, considering the sometimes considerable fuel premium?

No one ever mentions how much more a diesel costs up front, and then to maintain, then next most time diesel is higher than gas, all to get 6 more MPG and to blow smoke :ROTFL:

WOW someons been Drinking Hater aid.

I have seen 29 MPG to almost 30 out of mine on a long trip through western Maryland and west Virgina. Climbing mountains and doin 70-80 MPH the entire way. the Diesel's higher touque is actually a good thing for diving in that terain too. would a gasser do better than say 19 or 20 mpg and not be slowed by climbing the mountains in West VIrgina?

I really can't say how a gas liberty wold feel in that driving situation since I have never driven a gasser Liberty

I routinely get 22 on the hwy while paying for regular unleaded, not diesel, and I drive very aggresively, breaking 100 regularly. Considering the $19k I paid out the door for my fairly loaded kj vs. whatever an '05 CRD costs in '05 coupled with the premium for diesel fuel...that cost question to return the initial investment is a legitimate one. Coupled with the required mods the honest CRD folks preach...

I am a huge diesel fan having put 180K on a CTD. The CRD is no CTD.

I have pulled 32 more then a few times with mine and even 28 towing a 1300cc Busa. All i have to say is i am never going gas again. You have to look at it this way yes maintaining a diesel may cost more but they are rated at 1 million plus miles. While the gas motor is rated around 400 thousand if i remember correctly. Also i go 6.5K on Royal Purple oil before and oil change without any hesitation i want to see you do that with a gas. So that makes maintaining our vehicals equal there and of course gotta love that torque any gassers wanna hook up to some pulling sleds and see who wins and what fuel mileage looks like then?

Your CRD will never see 1 million miles, bet it does not even make 200k.I have yet to see a CRD(or heard of one) with over 150k on it without a major failure(IE turbo for you guys) that is 100% stock(no mods like unhook MAP or EGR,no trans upgrades,no tunes). There are many gasser KJ's on this board with well over 150k with no major issues beyond normal maintenance items.

Sorry but so far that is fact for small diesels in the US,gas is the better choice until you get above a 1/2 ton truck.

OMG there are a lot of fools in this thread. :-)r

First of all, this post was obviously just a joke. Don't get so worked up. The guy filled his tank, put it in neutral, and coasted down a LONG hill to post those numbers. So what?? My ZJ hit 99.9 MPG doing that. Should I snap a pic??

Second... the CRD on average gets 7 MPG more than the gasser, using real world numbers from people who own them. So diesel fuel would have to be like, $1.50 per gallon higher, or more in order for the cost to break even. So all the idiots saying "diesel fuel costs more" need to enroll in a Math 055 class at a community college. This is basic finance people...come on. The CRD is WAY WAY better in terms of mileage on fuel...and when you hook a load it gets even better.

Comments like this hurt your credibility. :) How many VW Jetta TDIs are running around with 200, 300, 500 thousand miles on them? Can you count them all? How many Benz diesel from the 1980s are still on the road here? I see them all the time. The Jeep KJ CRD has only been out for 5 years!!! And despite that, I've already seen some with over 150K on the clock.

Do some research, then post. Small diesels last as long or longer than any of the junk V8 diesels in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, with the exception of the legendary Cummins ISB family, because they were originally not designed for pickup trucks.

I guarantee you that eventually you'll see CRDs with hundreds of thousands of miles on the odo....and there won't be a gas KJ even close to that number. The 3.7/4.7/5.7 engine family from Chrysler is known to have sludge issues. Oh, but you knew that...right?

I'm only talking about the CRD,and I'm well aware of the VW TDI issues(there junk).Let's see proof of 100% stock CRD here is the states with 150k+ without major failure.

There are documented 3.7/4.7's with 300k+ and all original, the 5.7 is not the same engine family.

I'd never run RP but I do go 10K plus on Amsoil in both of my gas KJ's.

but I have no idea what mileage I get....its so bad that I don't keep track any more...... :banghead:

My average is skewed because I routinely have been making trips with a 7,000 lb. trailer in tow, and 'wheeling, and so forth.

If you took out those tanks I'd be mid 20s average doing a 50/50 city/highway mix. My wife's 04 KJ 3.7 BONE STOCK was averaging 16-17 on the same driving circuit.

Translation: The CRD blows the gas KJ out of the water when you are looking at fuel economy. The last time I towed the 7K lb. trailer...I hand calculated 16 MPG...which is what most gas KJs are averaging running empty. :ROTFL:

As of today, I have 400 miles on this tank and my EVIC is showing 28 MPG. That's with 255s and a lift kit. Read it and weep. A gas KJ can do that if you leave the engine off and tow it behind a motorhome maybe.

Before heavily modding my KJ I towed 3000lbs from South Dakota to Ft Lewis WA,got 23mpg's average for that 1500 mile trip, was running 245/75 "E" MT/R's at the time also.

Still seeing no advantage.

What it boils down to is prefrence my family owns a construction company here in town and had a 1989 ford F-350 diesel (pretty sure that was the first diesel Ford put in the F350's ever) which has pulled its whole life with a service body on it and clocked 498K before selling it to a local race team who are still using it today a year later. Now that is my reason for buying the diesel and plus i wanted a tow rig and a possible off-roader which it definitely qualifies for.

P.S. Cummins are nice motors but i will love my 7.3L Diesel.

LibertyCRD's math 055 failed to teach him anything about recovering the initial cost of the CRD ( as was mentioned but he "magically" missed" ) and the mandatory mods to make them drivable fo rany length of time. Fanboys of every stripe put blinders on when it comes to their little slice of 12,000 copy orphan life. Taken the blinders off about VW will show you that they have serious issues, gas and diesel, and have for decades. Just like Mercedes.

I like that the 5.7 was in the 3.7/4.7 family.too.... :-)r Hey, dat dere engune be a mopar...they all be the same right....

Yeah, I have riden in 150K gasser KJ's..... and seen others in person....CRD's? Not so much.

The CRD was a cute little experiment....that apparently was not worth continuing as that Italian marvel ( everyone looks to Italy for quality automotives) is still available installed in the jeep line....oh, wait.... :grim:

(dood....we can all read the CRD section and the tons of issues these things have. Considering that like 1 percent of Liberties were CRD and the HUGE number of problems, most well known, posted....welll, that 055 math comes up again...)

Maybe that's why my used one came in at $13K with 24,000 miles on it when I got it in Sept of 2008.

It amazes me how some people will write anything in order to prove their point.

Prediction: thread gets locked before 3 pages. . . . the over/ under is half a page. . .
