took her on an hour drive up to Daytona the other day and did 80 the hole way there drove on the beach for a while then on the way back doing 80 she started worming up it got half way to the 3/4 mark on the temp gage so i pulled over it cooled right back down then checked there was plenty of water and oil so i continued on doing 70 then eventually it did the same thing so i just slowed down..... so now not sure were to go from here... i took it on a 3 hour drive up to Ocala and it did not do that.....any suggestions??????

Could be that your thermostat is failing and it is failing closed - Blocking the flow of water to the radiator. I'm not sure how to test that however, so someone smarter will need to chime in.

These things don't really have the habit of running hot, it is usually that they are too COLD. Since the temp system is very simple, the only other thing I can think of as a possible cause is the water pump. BUT the pump is a fixed item - If your engine is turning, so is the pump. They only go bad by leaking.

Are you absolutely certain that you don't have a water leak? There is a little air purge on the passenger-side of the radiator at the top. That unscrews, and you are supposed to be able to fill more water with that open, b/c the air gets pushed out of the hole. I've never done it on the CRD, but that is what I saw on here somewhere.

dont think it would be the thermostat falling closed cuz it dose not do it at all since then and i know when i had taking it out in ocala it wormed up a little when running through sand for a wile....

Most of the time when thermostats fail they don't close or open early causing cold running.

Was recently told about overheating when torque converter starts to go.

Your fan clutch is bad and you're exceeding the posted speed limit.

the trany dose not feel bad and the fan clutch is deff always on i just went out to check......and has anyone put on electric fans instead of fan clutch on there crd????

You already have an electric fan. Its mounted in front of the radiator.
All CRDs have an electric fan and an engine driven fan w/ thermal clutch.

Exactly how did you check this? Engine running or engine off?

You might want to take it to the dealer and have the temp gauge recalibrated.
There is a TSB for it. Hopefully someone here can provide the TSB# for you.

My fan clutch rarely, if ever, engages. Even when cruising at 70-75 on the interstate and
I have never had it overheat.

you already have an electric - it's on the front - tends to turn on with the AC
How did you test your fan clutch?

went out felt the fan then started the truck and it was on as soon as i started it..... and i was talking about if any one replace the fan clutch with an electric fan on the back of the radiator ???

Nobody has replaced that fan with an electric because the electric would never be able to move the same amount of air. However, I drive my CRD hard on the highway, I tow large items with it, and have never heard that engine fan activate. Something else is going on here, or your fan clutch is completely out. You cannot test it in the engine bay, you need to take the fan out and put the clutch in an oven to see if it locks up (correct operation) when the temp gets over 250.

So do you know that the fan clutch was actually fully engaged?
Did you try to grab and stop the fan with your hand?
(I'm kidding, I'm kidding, do not actually try to do that, its a joke :lol: )

What I'm trying to say is that while the engine is running, the fan will always be spinning, it
just may not be engaged. In other words, the fan is just free wheeling.
When the fan clutch IS engaged you will hear a definite roar as the fan pulls air through the
radiator. You can even hear it while driving down the highway (but you may need to turn
down the radio :) ).

There is an old "shadetree" technique that involves tying a string to one fan blade and tying
it off so that the fan will not turn when you start the engine. While the engine is cold the fan
will stay "free" untill it warms up. Once it warms up the clutch will engage and the string will
break. (I'm not saying that this method will work on the CRD, nor am I reccommending that
you do it, I only use it as an example)

Another more common method is done while the engine is cold and NOT running.
Try spinning the fan with your hand. If the clutch is good, It should not spin more than 1/2-
3/4 revolution. If it spins freely more than one revolution, the clutch is bad.
(Note: this is not a definitive test, it is only an example of another way to test the fan clutch)

The only definitive test is to remove the clutch, put it in the oven, (as described above) and
try to turn the clutch by hand (wearing gloves).

why yes i work on cars and have my 4 of my ase so i know how that works but thank u i was gonna oven test it tomorrow but yes it was deff engaged but after i started driving it turned of so gonna put it in the oven ill let u know how it goes :5SHOTS:

I was having overheating issues with mine as well and took it into the dealers to have the temp. gauge reflashed which corrects the inaccurate readings and electric fan engagement errors. I also added a tube of Dr. Tranny's instant shudder fix to the tranny fluid to increase lubrication qualities, unplugged the MAF sensor and removed, cleaned and replaced the MAP sensor (which could cause excessive fuel consumption). I checked my clutch fan after the reflash by blocking off the radiator and covering the front of the Jeep with a blanket on a hot day and revving the motor at 2400 RPM's till it reached 200 deg. on a cooking thermometer to see if it would kick on (you can use a digital cooking thermometer stuck in the hole at the top of the fan shroud that the coolant line clamp is used for).

Mine is overheating when the weather is extremly hot, above 30 celsius. But if I turn of the AC, it runs normal again. But then I get overheated... :juggle:

ok update i took her back to Daytona and she did the same thing but when i took it out of over drive she cooled down to operating temp...so i called and checked and it had the torque converter replaced and tcm flashed...any one have any ideas???

The replacement torque converter put in under the F37 TSB was better then the ones installed before November 05 but still not very good :( The whole reason behind F37 was to get the TC to last till they were out of warranty and for the most part they planned it correctly :ALONE:
As you may have read there's now a new torque converter, called the Euro TC here, that was designed for the later more powerfull engines available in other parts of the world. What is going on is your lockup clutch inside the torque converter is slipping. This causes clutch material to come off, plug the transmission cooler and settle in the pan.
But reading your other post I would replace the mechanical fan clutch first. I know you have 4 cars but this one is a jeep and is different :BANANA: There have been a number of 05's that had the wrong or bad fan clutches in them.
The dealer replaced my TC and front pump at 34k miles a month ago under my "gold" warranty for these conditions but it never showed signes of overheating.
There's been more then a couple of threads here lately about TC's going bad and causing overheating problems.
If you have any kind of warranty get the euro" tc. If you have to pay get the SunCoast tc.

Beware...the mechanical fan at cold startup is locked (for some reason) and only starts to spin free after you rev over 3000. Or after 100 yards of driving.

Must have something to do with the density of the fluid inside the fan clutch.

How is your aircon rad? Full of bugs? Clean the rads out and try again, maybe that helps.

she is spotless in there and i was thinking of putting the fixed flex fan on and i guess from the sound of it a new torque converter what is the most bad booty one i can put in it????
