Hello all, I have an '06 libby and I'm having trouble with the tow package working the lights on my trailer. I think I remember towing with this thing a couple years ago and having no issues but now it won't work the lights. I checked the 7 blade connector with a multimeter and got no voltage when the turn signal was flipped. I checked every blade just in case it was ever messed with since I'm the second owner and no voltage on any of them. Is this usually a ground problem and is there a particular spot I can check to see where it is connected to the chassis? Also, what brake controller do you guys recommend under $100?

Don't use ANYTHING less than a Tekonsha Prodigy. The "other" Jeep site has a CRD section that has excellent instructions to wire in a brake controller. Unfortunately, it is not easy like with a Ford or GM. Install in the cubby in front of the shifter.

Here's the deal on the towing package wiring.
Trailer tail and running lights are powered by a relay package back in the right rear quarter panel. Power for that relay depends on if was put on at the factory or added by a dealer or PO.

If it come from the factory there's a fuse up front in the box by the battery labled towing or something like that that supplies the relay.
If it's the mopar harness kit that was added you'll still have the fuse up front in the box but there should be a single fuse mounted up by the battery somewhere if the installer followed the directions with a wire running to the relay in the rear.. Myself and others located the red "towing" wire from the fuse box up front and hooked into that inside the car near the steering columb.

If it was added there were two cables needed, the harness in the rear with the relays and 7 pin plug for the trailer then a "supplemental" harness. HOWEVER IF YOU HAVE A EVIC then the wiring for the evic also does what the "supplemental" harness does. There's also a fuse beside the drivers door labled to or something and that turns the voltage to charge your camper battery on when the car is running. the supplemental harness also has the blue wire for the brake controler of your choosing. I personally got a inexpensive name brabd for my 3000# trailer.

The turn signals also work off relays. See the factory service manual.

I would first check where the harness plugs in the rear of the 7 pin connector

Wow, thanks for that info. Since it is a CRD I am assuming it was factory. I checked both the fuses near the battery and beside the dash on the drivers side. The fuse was blown in the cabin fuse box but after replacing it with a fuse that lights up if it is blown I got no power running to the 7 blade connector. Could something else have blown?

Also, does the libby have a built in brake controller? I've been told by somebody that it does...

dsmith,

Unfortuately, no. It does not even have a plug to connect a controller like Ford and GM.

Not even a plug? I've never had a vehicle with a tow package that didn't have a built in plug... Well that was surely an oversight by Jeep. Well, I'm sure somebody has posted info on an installation. Any good links?

Don't "assume" because it's a crd that it's a factory towing package. Most bought them with towing in mind but when I bought mine in May 06 I found 5 locally but none had the towing package.

The fact you found not one but TWO fuses, if I understand correctly, external to the power distribution box that tells me the wiring has been added. From the factory there were no fuses up there that were not in the bax.

Now if you can find the blue wire behind the drivers's left kick panel it could have been factory installed but that "supplemental" harness I spoke of also has the blue wire.

This is wrong sort of.

A) ALL CRDs sold in the U.S. had the towing packing as standard equipment, which included the wiring for trailer brakes. So yes... his CRD should have all the wiring pre-existing from the factory.

B) The CRD does have the necessary wiring under the dash to connect a brake controller quickly. It's hidden somewhat behind the kick panel, but it's there. I wired mine up in no time. The longest amount of time was spent on locating the controller in the tiny cabin of the CRD so that it wouldn't hit my leg all the time.

By contrast.. my 2003 Ranger with factory tow hitch had NO wiring whatsoever...and I had to manually wire that entire truck to get working lights/trailer brakes. What a PITA.

Ah no mine did not have a electrical tow package on it when I bought it brand new. I had to buy both harnesses to wire up the 7 pin.

TOTALLY WRONG!!!

Being a diesel it came with some heavy duty items like power steering fluid cooler, bigger battery and alternator. But no way on the wiring.
I bought mine new and still have the brochure.

The towing package also included a class 3 hitch along with the necessary wiring.

I spent the better part of a day putting the two wiring harnesses in my CRD.

Well, i guess I was wrong, then right, and now I'm wrong again. Man I love the internet! Actually, thanks to everyone so far for helping me out. I have not had a lot of time to mess with it but I have to tow my car to the track in a week so I really need to get working on it. The two fuses I was talking about are in the manual. Both are in factory spots and weren't added afterwords. Slot 25 near the drivers left leg and the brake fuse near the battery.

Also, I had a second to test it out and the running lights work! So, now I know it's not the ground otherwise the running lights wouldn't work either so it has to be the hookups but why would all of them not work except running lights? As far as the brake controller goes, is it true that it plugs easily in a harness somewhere in the footbox? Everybody else seamed to have had some issues getting the controller plugged in??? I am bidding on a couple on ebay so we'll see how that goes. The prodigy seams pretty good from the reviews.

100% WRONG. ALL CRDs came with towing package as standard equipment. If yours was missing it when new...then your dealership has robbed it to make money, and you should confront them.

Also, it's on the window sticker as such...so if anybody needs proof that the CRD package came with towing AND 7 pin harness... I'll gladly post it up.

Well, so all I need is the power and ground behind the kicker panel? Okay, that doesn't sound too bad. Any ideas as to why only the running lights work?

The only explanation to this would be if they changed policy for the '06 model year and did not include all the same things that the CRD package came with standard in '05. That would make no sense at all... but I guess it's possible.

In any case, there are fuses on the dash (open the drivers door to find the panel) that also control the tail lights, etc. Perhaps you have a fuse blown here. I have a fuse there that blows all the time and renders my trailer without lights. I have to trace it down sometime....I think it's a ground short on my trailer itself that keeps blowing it. Check these fuses inside the Jeep if you haven't already.

And I had to install both the wiring AND the physical hitch underneath the back.

If "all CRDs came factory with the tow package" then why does my hitch have an e-trailer.com sticker on it, and I have bruised knuckles from installing it with grade-8 bolts in those 6 holes? I have the email with my "factory build list" somewhere, let me look for that and I'll post about it. But my CRD had NOTHING for towing. The dealer didn't "rob me" of anything. That isn't how a business works, except for shyster towing companies.

Thanks for playing tho.

Here you go LibertyCRD... You might want to give the factory a call and let them know that on my '05 they "stole" a bunch of "standard" parts from me. Tell you what: I'll even be generous, you can keep the parts that they should have given me according to this list. I'm waiting to hear their response to you. This is the FULL build sheet from the factory for my CRD. As you can see by the last item, the remote starter was requested by the original owner and factory installed, so this vehicle must have come right off the truck into his garage. But since "standard" equipment would ALWAYS be here according to you... Where is that tow package listed again?

Okay, let's not get tempermental. I appreciate everybody's help and I have heard plenty on the tow package both ways but I've yet to see a CRD with no tow package but I could be wrong. Especially since yours did not that proves that atleast some of them didn't have them. I would almost bet in might have been a Friday car. Everybody decided to get the last jeep done "quickly" and "forgot" the tow package! Just kidding of course.

A) ALL CRDs sold in the U.S. had the towing packing as standard equipment, which included the wiring for trailer brakes. So yes... his CRD should have all the wiring pre-existing from the factory.

No dealership touched my KJ CRD, it came from the factory to the boat to the port to my hands. I can scan my window sticker and show you that it did not come with and electrical tow package. I have the e-spec 7 pin harness hanging in the garage and the e-spec trailer hitch on the KJ now. I have the reciepts from Just for Jeeps for both US spec harnesses so that I could tow a trailer here in the US. I remeber the day I popped out the orange body plug to insert the harness.
