Hi Guys,
I was doing a bit of maintance to my 2005 KJ Jeep Liberty with a 2.8lt CRD diesel.
I removed the air filter box to clean it and discovered a ungodly oily mess around the air inlet hose to the turbo. The front of the turbo was just covered in a grease oily mess.
Has anybody found this before and what causes it, can it be modified to prevent it reoccurring.
Regards
Rob

Look in the CRD Noob sticky for the following: EHM or Elephant Hose Mod.

What you have WILL rot off that airbox hose, it is a designed-in failure point from the CCV putting oil into the intake.

Also, if you simply fill your oil to the "full" mark on the dipstick rather than measuring out 6.4 quarts and marking THAT level on the stick... You are part of the problem. The full mark is actually OVERFULL and the engine will simply push the excess right into the intake of the turbo through that CCV until it gets to the level it wants.

Welcome to the group.

I had it and I replaced my CAC hoses with Samco hoses and tightened the clips well. The mess seems to be drying up. Have you changed your CAC hoses?

Thanks Guys,
Just a question, what is a CAC hose, and is 'Samco' a brand name and who sells it.
So you replaced the rubber hose to the front of the turbo, did the clamps up real tight, and it sloved the problem.

Rob

No, you misunderstand which hose is which, there are 4 of them involved in this mess.

The small black hose that connects to the "hockey puck" on the top of the engine - This is the CCV hose. Remove it and put a rubber wine cork (seriously) into the airbox hose at the turbo. Get some clear tubing from Home Depot and connect that to the CCV puck, run the hose across the top of the engine and down toward the ground in between the radiators. Leave the end OPEN to the air. You have now created an Elephant Hose Mod, and the engine cannot put more oil into your intake again.

The hose between the airbox and the turbo will need to be replaced, or at least really cleaned. The oil WILL dissolve that rubber, and making the clamps "really tight" will only damage what is left of that hose.

The outlet of the turbo - That hose connects to the Intercooler up front. The intercooler is known as a "Charge Air Cooler" and the hose FROM the intercooler to the engine (Driver's side) is the CAC hose. Both intercooler hoses are made from silicone by a company called Samco, but unless the oil has eaten through your factory hoses and made them soft so the pressure blows holes in them... You don't need to replace those yet.

The oil in the inter-cooler hoses isn't abnormal (as noted above), but having it drain out where the hose meets the turbo is. I had the same issue and it was just a poorly seated hose and clamp that was on WAY too loosely.

If you haven't done so already, with the engine cool and all the hoses assembled and attached, get some degreaser down in there (diluted simple-green is a good non-toxic one) and rinse things out with a the garden hose (not pressurized, just normal water), then pop off the airbox and detach the warm (passenger-side) CAC at the turbo end. Use some disposable towels and wipe out all the oil from the end of the hose and the port on the turbo. Don't worry about the stuff deep in the turbo body, just get the hose flange nice and clean. If you feel inspired, you can also pop the hose out completely and rinse/brush scrub some of the crud out of it. Just make sure to rinse and dry the inside of it (blowdryer works well).

Re-seat the hose all the way up against the turbo and make sure the clamp is on there straight and tight up against the rib on the flange. Now you should have no more oil draining down around your turbo. Inside the hoses is another story...

Dan

Yes. That is the first indication that the hose has become "porous" and is allowing oil to be forced through tiny micro-holes in the hose. With that oil being forced through the hose, so is your boost. Add to that, the oil will just continue eating the hose from both sides and make all those holes larger... And you see how the problem isn't going to get any better.

EHM, replace those hoses, and don't worry about oil into your intake any more after the EHM prevents it.
