I am about to change the front differntial oil, but I don't know how many quarts to get. Manual say to fill to 1cm below the top, but how much do I need to get it there?

for the front 2.6 pints...... so there are 2 pints to a quart.... this means you will need to buy 2 quarts of 80W90. you won't use most of the second quart but will need some of it if the refill amount is correct.

If you are doing the rear I believe that takes 4.3 pints. Y will need to get 3 quarts and I think that has to be synthetic too atleast thats all I was able to find in either weight oil that was recomended. 75w90 or 75w140 if you tow

I just got the stuff to do this myself from Napa at my next oil change.

not advertizing for amsoil but here there page list the oils they recomend and the amounts. I used it as a guide for what to get at NAPA. This is for my 2006 CRD

I couldn't even get 2 qts. in mine before it started pouring out of the hole. You just drain it, then reinstall the drain plug and fill it til it runs out. Should take about 1.6 qts. or so.

The refill capicity is listed in pints... I know our english measurement system is confusing....... 2.6 pints is a quart and about 9 or 10 ounces. so if you got 1.6 quart in its full for sure. remember 2 pints to a quart and they sell it by the quart.

Gear Lube

The gear lube in the Dana 30a should be changed every 12,000 miles. Off-roading and towing subject the differential to increased torque, dirt, and water. If the Liberty isn't off-roaded, isn't used for towing, and follows the Schedule A maintenance plan, it may be possible to stretch this interval. The differential housing requires 2.6 pints (1.24 liters) of lube. Since the Dana 30a doesn't have a removable differential cover that could allow to clean it, 75W-140 synthetic lube should be used for either light duty applications or heavy duty off-roading. I had some work done on the front diff. so we changed all the drive train fluids. Of course you know the brand I use. :D I'm actually getting better mileage.

Hey Aaron, here's a writeup on diff fluid change.
http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28670
The only thing I suggest adding to this is on the rear, jack one side of the axle up a bit to help drain better.Let axle drain for 45 min, then lower back down and jack up the other side a bit and drain for an hour.
This will ensure that you've got as much old oil out as you could.

06 doesn't need additive to rear.I didn't know that when I changed mine last year.

Sorry for the slow response, but thank you all for the informtion and responses. I just got my fuel filters in, so I am going to start ordering fluids and hopefully have the fue filter on by the time I get here. Thinking of going with Mobil1, but lube is like well....lube. Everyone has their own preference.

That is now the standard interval(12k-15k) for any new vehicle, all the auto companies have changed to that interval for mpg's and synthetic gear oil use.Must show proof for those extended powertrain warranty's and the lifetime warranty's(can do yourself just keep the reciepts and mileage done).

I changed out my diffs around 5000 miles and then have been doing it at 30,000 miles since using synthetics. Not sure that the 12K intervals are really necessary. In my semi, using synthetics, the lube change interval is 300,000 miles with a 750,000 mile warranty. I realize we are talking major diffs in a semi, but synthetic gear lubes are pretty tough and very few Libby CRD owners are really stressing the drive train in such a way that lube shearing and other such things are going to cause the lube to break down and need changing sooner. Keep in mind that gear lube is in a closed system compared to engine oil and not as contaminated by outside stuff. There really is no reason to change the gear lubes at the engine oil extended inteval.

Of course, there are those that just love to have a reason to turn a wrench. And that is fine to.

When it comes right down to a fight over whether it is covered by warranty, keeping receipts might help, but not much. If it gets to fighting level, you can show all the receipts you want, but you will still need the law firm of DoWe, Cheatem, and How to help you. Legally, it has to be shown that the lube actually failed and was the cause. That is the only way you will finally win out in the end, by showing that the lube did not fail. Receipts would just be the icing on the cake. OEM's like to blame oils and lubes for everything they don't want to pay for. Most will still claim it was you or the lube's fault even if you show receipts. Receipts, to them, does not mean you actually changed the lube, only that you bought it.

Since Chrysler does not give us drain plugs on the rear diff, there is no way in he11 I will ever change mine at 12K intervals. Period.

Takesless then 30mins to change the rear diff fluid, and yes that is with pulling and cleaning the rear diff cover.Unless you have a 3rd member diff or get above a 1 ton diff you will rarely ever have a drain plug in a solid axle.

Get a lube locker gasket and only have to worry about scraping it once

There are some folks that have machined bungs into the stock cover andthere are some after market ones with bungs. My brother is a fabricator/welder, I may try to find a stock bottom half of the rear differential and mount a bung. I hope I don't get banned for saying mount a bung!

Is anyone running 75W90 in the front in lieu of the 80W90? Any harm in doing so? The 75W90 is easier to find and synthetic. Whereas most of the 80W90 are dino.

I use it. It will be fine. The 75 just means that it flows better at winter temperatures than the 80. The important number is the 90. They are both 90 weight gear oils at operating temperature.
