WHY DOES A/C SMELL FUNNY??

Hi. when i first start my a/c it smells a little like mold. then it goes away. any ideas?

Because you have mold growing on your evaporator,expensive fix.You can try to spray some mold remover or HVAC cleaner in the fresh air duct with the system on.

Almost directly under the passenger side wiper blade,the wiper blades need to be removed then the plastic cowl and you will see it on the passenger side.Do not have it in Max AC mode and make sure the AC is on though just not on Max setting.

I have the same thing. I've had it since the first summer I bought it new.
I remember reading somewhere a way to avoid this?

Don't use the AC.

Turn your AC off before you get home, let some air blow through everytime, if you run it and shut it off with it still running there will be moisture in there. I have done this for years and have never had a smell in the AC

But what Tom stated is correct and the best way to help prevent it.

Disinfectants for automotive AC systems can be purchased in auto parts stores but the most effective treatments are the most expensive.

1. Start by running the system in recirculate mode for ten minutes with fan on high. Use highest heat mode to dry out system-- keep compressor from engaging by removing wire from compressor body.

2. Make sure disinfectant compound you buy has long nozzle hose. Work hose through insulating foam around evap outlet piple so it gets inside the evap housing. Try to cover entire evap core by moving nozzle around the inside of evap core while spraying.

3. Prevent future buildups of mold by ensuring evap drain hose is clear of debris.

4. Profit.
