I need to get one to Mark so he can do his thing.
When I pull my old thermostat housing I will send it to Mark for the next guy.
Is this too much to ask?
Would paying shipping be enough?

You do not NEED a core to get this done. I have 4 total extra core's in circulation that people have donated to me that I can reman and send out. IF you happen to have an extra, you can send it to me to get in on the next batch. Otherwise you will get yours in the order you are on the waiting list after you have paid for the unit and the core charge. When you have swapped your unit out for the new one and sent me back your old unit, I will refund thecore charge.

Hope this clears things up,

- Mark

Another update and also wanted to say thanks for the housings that have been coming my way. Got a few in the mail a coupple weeks ago.

I have had a bit more time to work on this project lately. Got a few more parts cut. Had a few issues with my current tools which helped me realize I need to focus more on mass producing these and getting some better tools to help with this.

I'm working on perfecting my machining processes to make it more of a mass production operation so I just invested in some higher quality tools and some better tools to do the job quicker.
- I finally got a fly cutter set that accepts carbide tool bits to help machine the main housing better
- Bought a high quality carbide tipped parting tool to make it easier to cut off pieces as I go (I had a standard parting tool holder that held parting tool stock that squealed like hell and grabbed the aluminum when it got too far in).
- Also, after contacting onlinemetals.com, they have JUST started stocking .875"ID / 1.375"OD aluminum tube which is the exact ID and OD we need to machine the pressed in lower piece out of. It does cost a little more, but will help speed up production. So, thanks to them, this should save alot of time and hassle (I was previously drilling the .875"ID from a round stock piece each time because the proper size was not available).

Thanks to EVERYONE for being so patient and kind while I get the setup to make these and hanging in there waiting for a great product! You guys are GREAT, HIGH QUALITY people.

- Mark

Another update. Things are coming along nicely. I have 2 units ready to ship. One for squeeto, and one for geordi, more to come soon...Just need to machine 1 more lower block off piece and then press them both in and another 2 will be ready to ship. These things are really turning out nice!

So I finally tallied all the parts up. The whole kit is going to cost $145.00. There was a lot that went into this latest design and it performs flawlessly. It also includes New upper radiator hose, clamps, and all the necessities to bolt it up and be on your way (except antifreeze).

Here's the full parts list of the kit (comes with the thermostat installed in unit and ready to go):

- Thermostat of your choice (192* F or 180* F)
- Heavy duty reusable gaskets (Buena-N rubber, is reusable and doesn't wick water through material and provides better seal)
- Stainless steel hardware (2 SS nuts/2 SS washers/2 SS studs installed and permanently sealed)
- Lower aluminum block off piece (part of second design to fully block off bypass port when thermostat is open...press fit in housing)
- Intermediate adapter aluminum plate (reseals original roll crimped edge to ensure there are no leaks there)
- Water outlet housing (purchased new from dealership wholesale because there is not a after market source for this yet)
- Upper radiator hose (required due to different water outlet size)
- OEM gasket (to block)
- Hose clamps

Second thermostat is $11 more
Core charge of $100 to ensure I get your old housing back (refunded when I receive original housing)

I love the new gaskets, you should never have to replace them because they come off easily and are thick/durable enough not to tear, etc. The OEM gasket to the block should never have to be replaced since you will not ever have to remove that part of the housing again. The temp sending unit can stay installed from now on since it does not have to be removed for a thermostat swap, the hoses all stay attached also, so a thermostat swap is simply 2 bolts now and slap it back together. If you tow and want a cooler t-stat for summer and the warmer one for winter its a quick swap now.

I'd DEFINATELY recommend the 192* temp as that is what GDE recommends for our engine. It also puts out fantastic heat in the cabin area.

So that's it, heres some pictures:

Mark,

I appreciate the effort you put forth into making our Jeep Liberty CRD reliable and easy to maintain. That is excellent work to be proud of.

I may be in the market for one of your thermostats in the near future.

Great to hear things are coming along. I'm happy to pay a little more for something so well thought out and (significantly) better than the stock replacement.

On the "new radiator hose" topic, does the setup raise the outlet too high to work with the stock motor cover without clearancing ?

Dan

Very nice job following through with this project, kap. Also, I like the open intake idea. How does the turbo sound when you get into it? :-)r
j/k Again, thanks!

Dan,

Yes, the factory engine cover should work with no issues. I will double check on my jeep and put my cover back on to make sure.

**EDIT** I double checked and clearance seems as good as stock. No issues there. The unit actually sits under another hose that runs above it. I custom cut the stainless steel studs to the perfect length to ensure no hoses that run over the unit rub on the studs that are installed in the unit. As you can see from thse latest pictures, the studs barely come above the nuts after the nuts are torqued down and the gaskets are compressed.

Heres some comparisons of the factory unit side by side with the remaned one. Please note these pictures were from the prototype that used a slightly thinner intermediate plate so the new design will ~1/8" taller than this one in the pics (also used a stained water outlet from a junkyard - all kits will come with new shiny parts! lol).

Side by side comparisons
(don't worry about the used water outlet in the photo, all kits come with new water outlets)
Image

The new hose is a aftermarket molded hose replacement for some other vehicle that I found by spending hours at parts stores "shopping" in the behind the counter radiator hose section looking for the right bends in the right spots and right end diameters of the hose to fit our application. The hose I found comes with all the kits i put together and is the one shown in the pictures above. It has the exact same molded bends in the same spot as our original CRD radiator hose. The only difference between the factory OEM hose and this one is the end that goes to the new water outlet housing is smaller and the hose has an extra 8" that gets cut off because it is longer than we need. I have pre-cut the hose in the kits to the length we need so its ready to install.

Make sure you PM me if you want on the list (if you haven't already) as that is the best way to keep track for me because I don't update the list every day and update it only by PM's I receive.

I wish I was going to do the turbo kit, but it is hard to justify since my current turbo is doing great and making good boost and not making any bad noises. I admit, if my turbo goes, I am DEFINATEY doing the GDE turbo kit. :D

So far my torque converter has had NO issues with GDE hot tune and is doing great so again, hard to justify spending $ on that too. :) Might be making slightly less power up here at 6000ft above sea level(not much difference i'd imagine because with teh dynamic turbo i still run at same psi, just less oxygen in theat same ammount of psi), not sure if that is being nicer to the TC. :)

Well worth it if you live in cold climate. It puts out much warmer air and we need all the help we can get heating up that huge ammount of SUV air space we have, especially if you live in Colorado like me where it can be nearly neg temps INSIDE the car after sitting outside in the cold parking lot all day in the neg 20 windchill weather we occasionally get.

This winter will be NICE in the jeep :) Another excuse to go drive it in the snow. ha ha :)

What will be the result of the 192 degree be on our fuel mileage? I would think the warmer engine would produce higher MPGs.

Yep. It's closer to the theoretical ideal operating temperature of the engine, so better economy, lower emissions, etc. (also warms up a bit faster since the thermostat doesn't open earlier).

Another Update:

Well, I decided to try and figure out a way to pressure test the units...and...

Great Success!!!

I used a pvc pipe end plug and machined the plastic thinner and installed a tire valve stem for the water outlet hose. I used 1/4" plate steel and a custom made gasket to block off the rectangle port. I bought a 12mm x 1.5 pitch bolt, cut it to length and used a rubber washer to seal off the sending unit port. I used plastic tubing so I could see pressure building. I cut larger ruber hose to put between the clamps and plastic tubing to ensure the plastic nipples would not be damaged by uneven clamp force.
Image

I used a clear hose so I could see the pressure building
Image

Here it is with no pressure
Image

Here it is as I pressurize the unit
Image

As you can see here it is pressurized to 30 psi
Image

Here's a close up of the gauge
Image

After I build 30 psi, I remove the compresser
Image

Another angle
Image

From the back you can see the custom cut bolt with rubber washer installed
Image

A close up of the plastic tube. Easy way to verify pressure remains
Image

Lastly, the whole unit is submerged and checked for leaks with the 5 gallon bucket test
Image

After passing the quality check, the unit is completely dried, the apparatus removed, and all ports are plugged with single piece clean paper rags to ensure no foreign packing material enders the unit during shipping. This way dissassembly is not required before installation on the vehicle.
Image

Well, there you go....quality testing at its best!

Squeeto, yours is in the box and all packed up with one 192* thermostat installed in the unit and another 192* in the box.
Geordi, I received your payment, yours is awaiting the gasket for block/thermostat housing to come in before I send yours out with the one 192* thermostat installed in the unit. I just ordered some housing/block gaskets last minute because I forgot about that gasket till now.

I had time to machine one more block off port insert piece tonite and then called it a night so a 3rd housing will be ready to go pending a quality check and gaskets to come in.
