Last fall, while in Montana, I heard what sounded like thunder coming from the vallley that got louder as it came closer. Turned out to be a large herd of wild horses that sprung up in front of me, scaring the living daylight out of me.

Well enough of that, let's get back to work.....What's the compression on three look like?

Since #3 and #4 did the same during cutout test,I just plan to check compression on #3.
I'll try to get it done this evening when wife gets home from work and takes over with the youngins.
Hey Jim,I pulled my pump wire out of the relay without looking to see where it went.

Gotta be cylinder #2, then. Based on the fact that the noise lowered when it was unplugged and the compression is different than on 1 and 3, then a problem with #2 is the culprit.

I've seen it in person, and can verify that the sound is loudest on the driver's side, mid-engine, and in the front. Did we look and see if that #2 glow plug was blown out, or something? I can't remember if we did or if we spent the whole time looking at it and scratching our heads. . . . ?

Bub,

Sorry about not mentioning the compression tool has a design flaw in it, we were out testing Duramax the last couple weeks in altitude. It seems the bottom of the injector tool is not machined properly to seat in the same manner as a standard injector. Seating it till it is snug is good enough to check the compression. Your next step is disconnecting the battery, draining the coolant and removing the intake/valve cover assembly.

Hey thanks bro,I'm just so p'd about the whole thing.
As it stands,It's sitting on blocks without insurance(wife in now driving antique Camry),and not forced to rush things.I was about to order a VM tool kit off of E-Bay the other day to help with breaking it down, when Lee(Mcinfantry) called me the same day and was suggesting that I try and find a used motor and do a swap instead because I'll end up spending the same in the long run,and that's if I fix it.I blew off the tools and have been doing some heavy thinking last few days and getting nowhere.
Soooooo............just don't know what to do at this point, but at least I don't have the wife yelling at me to work on it(probably because she knows it'll cost her denero).

How bout it?

I can see the intelligence in getting a used motor (if you can) to stuff in there, but at the same time... Do you need the special tools to pop the top off? Haven't you already gotten the timing cover off and IIRC, changed / checked the timing?

I'm not suggesting you NEED to change the timing, just that you have already been that deep into the motor, haven't you? The tool set shouldn't be more than about $500 or so these days, and I got the full set for that much. It would just suck bigtime to dump $1500+ into a new (used) unknown motor that might have other issues (don't get me started about mine and gremlin stomping) when you KNOW that yours WAS running, and STILL runs, even if it is making a bad sound. It hasn't done anything catastrophic *yet* so you are in a better position than I was when I installed my turbo - Mine had already done something bad by then, but was only making a tiny ticking sound that went away.

Then it went boom.

Had I pulled the head (Free, but yea its a PITA) I might have seen the problem (probably not) and been able to save my block.

If you are going to pull the whole motor anyway, what would it hurt to scribe the pulleys and head with a sharpie, then lever the tensioner and pull the belt without any other special tools? The timing can ALWAYS be reset with the special tools after you break it, and then at least you will have more information to think about without spending money first. Make an informed decision, with all the info, right?

Pull the head. I've still got the big stuff here, and I'm sitting on the top end parts for you until I know whether you need them or not. I'm not selling them until I know.

Besides - I think we all want to see a picture of what that block looks like from the top end, and if you can touch the pistons and make them move with just your hands.

Bub, I am with geordi, you can do it.

On the other hand, I know that there is an engine available at http://www.daveysjeeps.com for $3200.00.

Good luck buddy.
