CRD Fuely data

I would bet someone has already geek out on this, but just in case I went and compiled all the 2005 and 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD data I could find on Fuely. The grey line is each CRD found and the red line is average MPG of all data.

Data set = 56 CRD's.
Standard deviation = +/- 3MPG
Mean = 23MPG

I went back and dropped all the data points that had 25 or fewer fill ups in attempt to minimize the effects of vehicles that may have had:

1. Above average tanks of: flat highway, stop/start/hills in the city, towing, wheeling, etc.
2. Singular fuel (same fuel station or running bio)
3. Biased filling (topping off or not filling up all the way)

But the average was 22.6MPG. Not much different from the entire data set mean of 23MPG.

I think these are good, REAL numbers if you are a potential buyer or current owner of a CRD.

Yes, this is good data. I've owned 2 CRDs and both of them averaged 23 MPG over the time I drove them. Interestingly enough, this is EXACTLY what the original window stickers also indicated we would get. Anyone looking for a CRD ought to expect low 20s MPGs when doing their pre-sale calculations.

This is still several miles per gallon more than the gas KJs are getting (I have owned one of those too) and you can also check that on Fuelly. So it makes you feel better when you see that at least we are saving money at the pump (just not anywhere else).

Some quick math will tell you that the CRD gets 35% better fuel mileage than it's V6 counterpart

Nice post. I would be one of the data sets thrown out. But at 500miles/fill-up, it takes a little while :ROTFL:

If the data set is big enough. I would bet that you could tease out those that need a new thermostat. I have easliy gained 2 mpgs from that expensive endeavor.

I'm not familiar with the infamous thermostat leading to more fuel economy on a CRD. What's going on with that? I guess I should probably check the forum...

X2 on this. One of the reasons why my fuelly data is showing such a low average right now is because I drove around all Winter last year with a bad t-stat and didn't even realize it. This year, my Winter numbers will almost certainly be higher.

Many folks are beginning to notice that their stock TC has gone bad and isn't allowing the engine to reach it's designated operating temp of 176*. Kapalcinski has designed a new tstat housing that allows you to use the more optimal 192* tstat or you can replace the dead one with another OEM unit... either way, you would see mpg improvements, as the engine must be at operating temperature to be most efficient.

Yep, I think I'm 3rd on the waiting list at the moment and am really hoping for it before the cold hits. My biggest complaint on the CRD is that my mileage is for poo with my most common driving situaton (i.e. less than 20 miles). Granted the diesel is a heavy hunk of iron to heat up, but this should at least HELP.

My highway fuel economy (or any time the engine is actually at operating temps and moving forward) seldom drops below 25. I averaged 28 on a 200 mile trip with a canoe on the roof

Alas, the overall average for me is down closer to 20.

x2. Mine made a difference for sure. The ECO tune helped, but I'm also getting ready for my first Michigan winter blend fuel with the ECO.

I've been getting 26 mpg for a little while now. The thermo helped. I'm thinking about plugging in the jeep sooner this season, but I'm not sure how much it will make a difference. I have a timer so it's only 2 hours a morning.

I would say this is an important one. My whole winter last year was at just over a quarter notch on the gauge. Now it's 50% of the way. I hope to see a better average this winter.

I'm normally just 1 or 2 ticks below right in the middle. But this change occured right after my GDE ECU HOT flash and has been this way ever since. Not sure if it's related and the only thing that ever dropped my MPGs was my wider wheels/rubber... but after the GDE flash it brought me back up to where I was with stock rubber. GDE = AWESOME.
