What 12 oil changes at 10,000 mile intervals does in a GM 3.1 V6,oh and that is Castrol syntec for the last 11 oil changes. Now the guy either has to junk it or rebuild the engine(or used/remaned).

A picture is truly worth a 1000 words.
I remember tearing ones down that used Quaker State back in day that looked like that.
Real mess to work on for sure

While I get how the internal cumbustion engine works in theory, I'm really a mechanical noob. That said, even I know that doesn't look good.

I remember getting a mustang gt like that in the shop. Pulled the vlavle v=covers and could barely see the cams. We denied the warranty repair and when he pissed and moaned we took him to the engine and he shut up really fast.

I also had a customer when I worked for jiffy lube back in high school that didnt know she had to get oil changes and I think she had 120k or 130k miles. I opened the drain plug expecting dust and bats to fly out but instead nothing came out. To say the least I was surprised the little neon SOHC was still running.

Wow! Thats why I'm religious about changing my oil! Not to mention why I use quality oil! Almost 120, 000 miles and she still runs like new!

liquid:

yeah that same deal has happened with the Focus a few times, pulled the plug after a 15k interval or so using the cheapest oil known to man.. and basically have soot fall out

which basically entailed me jumpin up and down and screaming at 3 people that was like a year or so ago

which .. didn't do a bit of good, i checked it when i finally moved up here a month or so ago.. it's at 12ish K

I'm almost scared to run it for a few short change intervals and switch it to any decent oil for fear that whatever GUMMY build up is keeping the stupid thing running will shift, release a pound of metal or so.. and kill the pump and bearings etc

add on, the rear view mirror is taped on with duct tape.. the center console/armrest keeps falling off into the back floorboard and all 4 tires seem to have broken belts and one of the engine mounts appears to be toast..

i really don't like the thing very much..

we basically have 2 drivers who can't tell if they're driving around on, literally flat tires :P
then they had a money problem that equated to them validating not doing basic vehicle services..

Are you having to work on that 3.1?... Sorry if you are :dizzy:

My 72 Cutlass was similar to that when I got it from my sister, all she used was Quaker Sludge, I had inprints of the rockers on the inside of the valve covers when I took them off. Motor lasted 150K miles though before I pulled it and still running strong.

what do you think was keepin the lifters pumped up :P

my 79 cutlas supreme was a supreme heap, but basically indestructible

it ran better, after the fan belt popped and i said whatevers.. and drove it for about 45 mins till it seized, it actually cranked the next day and ran even better.. probably straightened out all the bent rods it had before i cooked it:P

THIS is why my father, a 35+ year veteran mechanic, won't touch anything but Pennzoil, and changes the oil on stuff he services frequently.

Up till about 10 years ago penz was perifin based(along with Quaker State) and the above pics would happen regardless of how often you changed your oil if you used that junk.

That is the reason why penz had the knickname as the "Mechanics worst nightmare" for a very long time.

Years ago I was going out to Utah from Chicago, back then highway speed was 70mph and you would probably be running 80+ most of the time. I thought I give my 1966 Galaxy rag top, 289C.I. a treat so I put in Valvolien 50wt. racing oil in it.
When I got to the Nebraska line I heard a clattering in their motor. Luckily My cousin lived in the area, we pulled the oil pan and the oil had gelled, it even twisted the oil pump rod. never used Valvoline again.

I use either Kendall oil or Mobil in the vehicles. never had a problem, then again, never saw the inside of the motor, probably becuase i had no issues. (knock on wood)

either way, i think i'll change the jeeps' oil this week after seeing that!

As far as being on topic, I use mobile 1 synthetic and a quality filter every 3k miles or 3 months. I catch alot of crap for doing this but Im super anal about my baby. I rely too much on it to save a few pennys, plus I get an oil change for $30 from advanced auto and can knock it out in a matter of minutes.

Yeah people would be surprised at how bad people maintain domestics. The 4.6 romeo in mustangs, trucks and SUVs is not a gel'ing motor (like some toyotas). Its a solid motor and only happens when you dont take care of it. I swear the issue with domestic brands having "reliability issues" is due to owners beating the crap out of the vehicles and not taking care of them. I swear almost every time I had a ticket the customer cheap'd out and several times when there was a concern that was caused by the customer they stated they were going to sell it and buy X import brand. Frustrated the hell out of me.

So I will admit I get VERY uppity when people start screaming consumer reports this and JD power that when bashing American brands. darn near makes me want to punch babies.

No No No! TJKJ...that is not sludge buildup, that is the newest self-adding NVH (noise vibration harmonics) dampening insulation technology from the manufacturer. It is well known that as the years and miles add up, an engine may become slightly noisier. Well, this miracle insulation goo will all but eliminate the NVH from the engine. Granted, the engine may not run, but a non-running engine is a quiet engine.
