Can the sarcasm, you have been lucky thus far. Its your life and your money, so do what you want. I don't care how cold it gets anywhere that my CRD isn't, I only care about NEVER spending that money to replace the engine again.

I agree..plug it in..an hour is fine..I'm working on a set up so you don't have to have an ugly wire hanging from the front of the car...

Mine always gets the plug if it drops below 40 all night for right now until i get a new time. Also i really do enjoy the quick warm up times and the nice easy starts every mourning. Also i am sure a nice easy start is alot easier on the glow plugs then the rough starts you get with out it. And as far as this crap about it not getting as cold in GA as northern UT so what cold is cold to oil it gets thick all the same and is bad all the same. And as far as the block heater causing fires i have been plugging mine up for 3 winters now no fires and mine is and 05 i do check my cord atleast once a year.

Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question, but do all KJs come with a block heater, and if so, how do I identify the plug?

Yes, all the CRDs come with the block heater. The plug and cord come out of the factory tightly wrapped around the oil dipstick holder. I leave mine permanently unwound and routed to the front with the plug forced through the plastic grill so it is always readily available.

By the way, I reported on this forum last year that my heater stopped working, and found that the copper wires had fatiqued to the point that I lost connectivity. I cut a few inches of the cord and installed a new plug and all is well.

Lancer,

If we recollect correctly, the block heater was only installed on the North America Liberty CRDs. It was an option in Europe mainly for the most northern countries.

Ah - thank you for the information GDE - I thought I couldn't see any unexplained plug under the bonnet!

You're confusing the engine block heater plug-in versus the fuel heater which many have either replaced or unplugged.

Plugged in and on timer when it's 10°F outside or lower (usually 10-15 degrees warmer in garage). But that only helps on about half of my starts. While at work, plugging in isn't an option, but it's always started, 5 years, 80k miles on original battery in Michigan.

Matter of fact, the battery is about the only thing that has lasted on mine. OH $#!^ DID I JUST SAY THAT?

Here is what I did, connected up an extension cord splitter and an battery trickle charger, this way when plugged in the battery keeps topped off and the engine gets warmed.

What I could suggest for your situation is a remote switch. Something similar to a remote for the Christmas lights. When you’re ready to go out just push the button about an hour or two before you go out. Or up here in Canada the local Home Hardware or Canadian Tire sell a temperature switch for block heaters.

I find two hours on the block heater before I go out works best!

Two hours is working well for me, also. Just one hour didn't seem to give a good clean start. I'm wondering now why I haven't put a block heater on my '97 TJ (gasser of course). IMO, all engines get stressed in a winter cold start situation and the block heater does wonders.

How far does the signal carry on the remote switch?

Thanks for all the great info.

After five years of November through April plugging in Michigan, I would say no. I don't even know what would burn.

I have a timer for higher amps I think (I'm not walking out to look) and two hours before I leave is plenty of time to start it.

Here in Alaska, I plug mine in anytime the temps drop below 0. I have the chord on a timer and it starts about 2 hours before I leave for work, then shuts off about the time I leave.

Makes the starts a lot less noisy in the mornings, and it helps a little in warming the cab.

CF

Edited to add, this is also where the bush pilots used to drain the oil out of the plane as soon as they landed and took it inside with them, then refilled the plane in the morning before starting :SOMBRERO:
