If your driveshaft boot looks like this its time to replace the head or get a new driveshaft, replacing the head is only 1/3 the cost so why not just do that.
Image
first step is to hit up eric at automotivepartsunlimited.com and get your new head or driveshaft
Image

Image

Remove the 6, 8mm bolt on each side of the drive shaft. highlighted in green
Image

Image

pull the transfer case side of the driveshaft up over the transfer case yoke, pull the transmission side down and under.
Image

Here is what a front driveshaft looks like
Image

Here is what a dead boot looks like, it was full of sand and grit
Image

use a set of snap ring pliers to remove the retaining clip
Image

Now paint your driveshaft so it dosnt look like total crap.......just kidding i was bored. (and yes my coffee table is rhino lined)
Image

slid on new boot and crimp the band
Image

fill boot side up with grease, and grease the new head
Image

Slid on the new head and install new retaining clip
Image

Fill top side of head with grease and insert top plate making sure its flat on all sides
Image

toss it back in the same way and have fun. I reused the 8mm bolts that were on the jeep because the new ones had larger heads that would be a little harder for my tools to get in there.

Nice write-up. So how much money savings is there to be had by doing this? And is this still better than swapping out for spicer u-joints?

Less than $90 for the CV shipped when I did mine, As Twack says reuse your bolts.

Nice write up. I found I had this issue this week when we had a big snow storm roll through. I found a place that sold the cv joint for 70 bucks and 11.25 to ship. I haven't heard of them but we will see. It might be where automotive parts unlimited gets there's from.

http://www.driveshaftparts.com/cv-joint ... d_430.html

UPDATE: This is the same box and everything that is pictured above. I got it shipped to my house in Idaho Falls for $81.25.

Also if you call around to your local parts stores, at least here in Idaho Falls they don't know the difference between a drive shaft and axle so here is a dorman part number 932-301 (rear, transfer case side) and 932-302 (front, differential side).

I have also read that I can take off the front drive shaft and can still drive it as long as i don't put it in 4 wheel. Is this correct?

Yes you can drive without the front driveshaft
you can also pull either or both Cvs and drive it

The head is super easy to replace, took about ten minutes to do one for someone the other day

darn... I wish I knew that the CV was replaceable. I bought a whole new driveshaft. It weren't cheap.

Oh well, I guess you live and learn. I'll know better next time.

What do you think...time to change it? Perhaps this is all the noise I am hearing. I have not bought the new Cats yet so I am excited about this and hopeful that it might be the problem child.

Is it necessary to do both ends or just the end closest to the t-case?

99% of the time its just the transfer case end that needs R&R'd

IMO if the boot isn't ripped I wouldn't worry about it. And it only takes an hour or so to change it out so not a big deal if you end up changing it later down the road.

You can take out the drive shaft and drive without it 'til you get ready to change the CV.

CV joint came in today...will work on this project this weekend. I want to work on it tonight but my luck it will take a bit longer than I have and I would be SOL as it would probably be hanging, the drive shaft that is, lol.

I am curious...when I removed my drive shaft I had some...oil in the front in-between the cover and the front axle (opposite end for the CV replacement). Do I need to put more in there when I put it back together or was this just a fluke? I am not sure that it was "oil" but it is some form of lube/rust protector?

I'm curious about the rhino-linded coffee table.

How many miles on your KJ? What year is it?

Shaft is all put together...but still sitting on my non-rhino lined chest freezer in the garage. Had zero energy to work on it this past weekend. Next weekend, I took off Monday to go hunting but now the wife is sick...but she keeps telling me I HAVE to go hunting. LOL. Can you smell a trap or what? :grim:

Ok I have my new CV head on it's way to my house. Plan to fix it this weekend. Do I need loctite on the bolts? Or just torque 'em to a certain spec without thread locker?

pull the transfer case side of the driveshaft up over the transfer case yoke, pull the transmission side down and under....

ok for me that step isnt going so well. Ive got the whoole thing disconnected but I cant seem to get the driveshaft to slide down and under. I cant get the back high enough to clear the front... the exhaust is in the way.. the engine skid is in the way... the whole jeep just seems to be in the way :(
