Leaking from somewhere...need a chilton's book?! or help?

Let me begin by saying that I LOVE my 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD. Best CAR ever. But upon starting it last Saturday, the odometer flashed LOCOOLANT and sigh, the chaos began to unfold. After telling my husband that such message was flashed, he told me to stop and pick up some coolant and he would take care of it after I got home and the ol' girl was cooled off. Sigh. He opens the hood and sees that coolant/fluids have been flung and determines by previous gas engine experience that I need a new water pump. New pump, gaskets ordered and recieved. He gets the part and I'm POSITIVE that is the water pump and he can't find where it goes on the engine. By reading these boards (thank goodness for these forums!) I now have the knowledge that it's run by the timing belt...eek. Anyway, husband no longer thinks that it's the water pump, but possibly some hoses...what are the likely hoses that need replaced and part numbers? Also, can anyone PLEASE, PLEASE tell me where I can get an engine diagram/service manual since there are no Chilton's books for our beloved CRD? Any help is greatly appreciated....

This seems to be a popular one these days. I just went through it and, just like other members had posted, check the EGR cooling lines (driver's side, low on the engine, in the back). Also, check the hoses that go to the coolant reservoir (the white container on top of the motor, passenger's side). Finally, check the radiator cap itself.

Mind you, all this is in addition to the normal radiator hoses, which can leak over time just the same as in a gas model.

Hopefully, there isn't the ominous "white smoke," that would indicate a leaking gasket somewhere, allowing water to get inside the engine.

There will be a number of posts, by others, to follow, I'm sure.

To get a more accurate answer in the furure I suggest you include your vehicule history (AKA year/millage/ service done on it if need). Racetracer already put you on the right track for services manuel link, I will go a step futher and point you direct on the section you will find your answer.

What you want is a factory service manual. 10x better that Chlitons or Hayes. Pricey though. The one for my Dodge was about $90, but worth every penny. I got the one for the jeep on the www for free. Its was floating around and I got a copy. It may be gone now.

If your truck has about 100k on it, just replace everything, timing belt, water pump, coolant and any bad hoses. If it is of lower mileage, look for the leak. Ours did this recently and I can't find the leak. Only needed about a pint of coolant. I'll wait of the leak to find me. BE SURE to use the correct coolant. Zerex G-05 and distillated water.

Check around the original spring clamp at the bottom left side of the coolant reservoir.

Mine leaked droplets of coolant around the clamp area only when the engine had reached high temperature and high pressure.

I felt the wet coolant but couldn't visibly noticce it.

Repaired it with a 3/8" strap clamp from the local auto parts store for .75 cents.

My Rig is a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD, hunter green. My girl has 133K on her and looks to be overdue for the water pump, timing belt, etc. Husband is taking it to a diesel mechanic tomorrow for a pressure test to hopefully find the leak and convice the fella to take my precious CRD under his wing for all of the 100K service work....

Thanks so much for everyone's help! I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for CRDs in my area...Kansas City, MO area...we are in a rural area about an hour away.

Best to replace the timing belt and water pump with 133K, even if it did not leak. Also check all the hoses around the thermostat, good time to change out when you have the front cover off.

Your diesel mechanic will appreciate the manual.

Read the noobie guide...and it's good...thanks for the information! For all that had to read my post and groan and think to themselves...geez Angie...read the noobie guide...I posted just to make sure that I got all the input I could get.

We are now looking for a good diesel mechanic in our area to perform all of the 100K maintanence...not an easy feat. Plan to replace the water pump, the pulleys, the timing belt, the thermostat.

Anyway, thanks for your patience and your help!

Hope to get another 150K out of my CRD!

Forget the coolant problem, get that timing belt replace pronto. There is recent thread around here by a guy that let his get to 120K and it let go. Many thousands in damage. I wouldn't even crank it until it had a new belt.
