stability control as standard and if it is on the 05 it was ordered that way???

full time 4wd from 06 from 05(my 04 liberty does not have full time)

all 06's have ESP.

all 05's and all 06's have the NV242 (select-trac) transfer case.

We have both the 05 and 06. The only difference I can tell is the traction control on my wife's 06 - which I hate because it reduces momentum. Same select track: High 2wd, High 4x4, High AWD, Low 4x4. (4x4 just forces the front & rear axles to spin at the same rate.)

I believe there is a difference in the ECU and wiring harness as well.
Keith over at GDE says that the programmer works faster on the 06s because it uses the CAN bus on it, and the 05s it doesn't work as fast so I'm making an assumption here, but it seems logical to me. GDE can verify this.
Also, because of the difference in the ESP (05) and ESP/TCP(06) bits there is different set of sensors on the rear axle. (Thus the difference in the wiring harness) The 05's could be bought with a limited slip diff (not sure if was standard or not) but it was not available on the 06, the TCP was supposed to do this and was standard on all 06 CRDs.

06 has "diesel only" reminder stamped on the fuel guage.

06 has stability program standard (ESP)

06 doesn't have Trac-Lok option due to ESP standard

06 has CAN BUS electrical wiring

06 has various sensors and brake parts that 05 didn't

06 has the worst factory warranty ever... 3/36 ONLY

There are a few other minor packaging changes, but otherwise it's basically identical to the 05. My preference... I'd take an '05 over the '06 any day of the week.

I believe the EPA mandated engine computers communicate using the CAN buss starting in 06 :SOMBRERO:
That splits the small number of North American CRDs in two :dizzy:

I'll take an 06 over an 05 anyday. The ESP/Traction Control work great. Many times I forget to put the vehicle in 4 wheel drive on the steep hill that I live on (city doesn't plow it), and the traction control works its magic. Fortunately, I am my own warranty and don't mind not having 7/70k...most dealerships would screw up a diagnosis and repair anyway.

I purposely sought out an '05 because of wanting a LSD and not wanting traction control. The 7/70 also substantially reduced the cost of buying a 7/100K DCJ ESP.

However, 70K miles later, I realize I would have been better off with an open diff and installing a Detroit Truetrac. The TracLoc is not that effective a LSD when it is at its best, and it really does not last more than 35K miles, even in almost exclusively easy on-road driving. With the factory ESP, it only costs $100 to rebuild at the dealer, but when the warranty runs out, we'll be ready for our third LSD rebuild.

The Detroit Truetrac is much more effective, will last several 100K (no clutches to wear out) and is virtually seamless in operation.

You will have to buy an open diff to install one on a Jeep that came with a TracLoc from the factory, which increases the cost, substantially.

I would buy an '05 with an open diff, if I had it to do over.

I agree... which is why I have an open carrier, 3.73 ring gear, and accessories pulled from a salvage yard for FREE sitting in a box waiting on me to pick out my locker. I think I might go Aussie Locker again. $275 new, 100% lockup when needed, no clutches to ever wear out. Wee!!

No you don't. I had factory TracLoc, bought a DTT and had it put in. Still have the old Tracloc in my garage too. The DTT is an entire carrier replacement, so it doesn't matter what came stock.

Anyway, 05 is the best year. No electronic traction nannies. ESP is the worst!
There weren't any factory improvements from 05 to 06 that you can't just do yourself now.

That tracloc would look good in my jeep, got any plans for it?

I would love for it to find a new home. PM me.

The DTT is pure awesome btw. Highly recommended.

Hey CAT,

You just made my day! When I loooked into a Truetrac for my '01 PSD Excursion, I was told I had to buy a whole new carrier to replace the one for the clutch type that Ford uses. I assumed it was the same for the Jeep. Roughly what did you pay for all the parts and exactly which model did you get to replace the TracLoc?

Thanks,

DOC

You want part number 912A553 29 SPLINE. The diff will run you about 500 and install will be another 2-300.

Within the ESP/ABS the whole rear braking section was redone in the '06, basically with each rear brake having it's own independent brake line.
Other thing of note is that if you are doing mods, it always seems there is some kind of spacer or other little thing that you need for the '06. Nothing too expensive, just annoying.
