Well I forgot all about emailing GDE to ask them if you already had their tune, if you need dealer flash or not!?!?
Has anyone confirmed this, I was betting of GED commenting on this but they must not get on here much.
If anyone has confirmed (by recently asking) this please let me know so I don't have to bother them with another question! They are very helpful and I don't want to be the guy asking the repetitive question ha.

You only need a GDE tune with the new glow plug strategy, Keith made me both a "before" tune for original glow plugs and an "after" tune that has the new strategy for ceramic glow plugs. NO dealer reflash needed, I have tried it both ways and know Keith's tunes work!

I couldn't find this on their site and haven't been able to get a hold of them... do you (or anyone else) know if you have to purchase the whole $450 tune or are they offering a cheaper alternative for those that just need the glow plug update?

Don't know, it is pretty easy to contact GDE by email or phone and ask them. But I think you need to order one of their tunes to have the GD tune included. But I suppose they are capable of making a GP only update tune but have not heard about such an offering.

143 glow plug kit, flash at dealer $$$$, GDE update 450, this is a pretty expensive update for someone who would rather leave it alone but have no choice. :furious:

If both type of glow plugs work at same 7 voltage, what is the big deal?

I thought that the new ones ran at 5 volts and 7 volts at the current cycle will burn them up.

That's what I was told... .maybe someone with actual facts can clear all this up!

I looked in Mitchell1 wiring diagram and didn't find any resistors before the glow plug controller. It gets 12 V from the battery starting system. The resister must be built in the glow plug controller itself. The pin out of the glow plug controller are as following:

1. #1 glow plug red/wht
2. #2 glow plug red/brn
3. #3 glow plug red/yel
4. #4 glow plug red/orn
5. blank
6. ASD relay output brn/pnk
7. ground blk/ lt grn
8. blank
9. signal from ECM wht/brn
10. control from ECM lt blu/brn
11. B+ gry from starting and charging system

That mean the only thing to worry about is how long they stay on. If the new metal glow plugs can't handle the same time as ceramic, then what good are they??

Well it seems the kit just needs to be installed with the new relay and metal plugs and it should work. I dont want to be the first to try it ha, maybe there is a flash that is needed and I fry the new plugs...

What I do know is that this sucks, there are people (me) that live in cold areas and can't start their vehicles unless plugged in!

The most important thing after the glow plugs change is to make sure the PCM is updated.

Remember, the old plugs are ceramic, the new ones metallic. This isn't just the "coating" but the whole material of the tip.

The PCM sends a PWM signal to the Glow Control Unit, it translates that signal into a voltage that is sent to the glow plugs.
If you send the same voltage to both plugs, one material will be hotter than the other. BTW, they're both low-voltage systems.
The PCM update will make sure that you don't overheat the glow plugs and break them.

1. What is the number of the new PCM update ?
2. What is the difference between two Bosch glow control units with the same Bosch p/n ?
3. How PCM signal can change voltage in GCU ?
3. Why there is no any CY GCU p/n in my KJ Cherokee ?

Good one mjk, I just called to confirm my order from over the weekend.
The polite gentleman said that they had 7 sets left after me.
That was about 10 minutes ago.......

Don't install the new glow plugs without changing the PCM program for these new glow plugs as damage to both the new glow plugs and possible your engine will occur. Options right now are wait for dealer/oem reflash/update or program it with a GDE tune that has the new glow plug strategy. Pick one or keep plugging it until to get it started.
