Thanks. :)

stoutdog, your unit is ready to ship, I should have time to get to the post office in the next couple days and get it shipped out to you. :) The JB Weld sealed it up fantastic and it is STRONG. Passed the 5 gallon bucket test w/ flying colors. Should be good for a lifetime with the brass in there now :). and the best part is you'll never have to change out the temp sensor, main thermostat to block gasket and all the hoses ever again unless one fails or they just plain get old and you feel like it. lol

Looking forward to it! Thanks for all the hard work.

Bit of a dilemma here.
Bought a new thermostat for the 100K tune, have just 90K on it now.
Looks like oh, fish or cut bait? Any ideas on what to do?

You mean you bought one pre 100k and you only have 90k on your jeep now and don't know what to do with the new unit if you want one ofthe modded ones?

If that's the case, you could sell your new unit to annother member, i heard they are on back order from the factory right now so you should be able to get full price re-selling it if that is what you want to do.

Update:

I marked all the units on a flat spot with an engraver to keep the cores straight so I can get your same core back to you and also just in case there is a cracked core or leaky fitting I know who to contact. If a 90º elbow brakes during removal I would expect the owner of the core to pay for the upgrade to the brass 90.

The good news is that in all cores (so far) that have had a leaky fitting the 90 has been removed easily (probably because the sealant is breaking down and degrading/leaking). The only 90 that did break was one that wasn't leaking, and the owner just wanted the brass upgrade for long term strength.

Seeing as whatever compound used to seal the ports is breaking down over time, it makes more sense to upgrade to brass sealed w/ the JB Weld so you don't have to remove the unit ever again to reseal the ports. <-- My :2cents: again. Take it with a grain of salt :ROTFL:

Stoutdog has the first brass upgraded ports (unit already shipped and received by him) and as soon as unit is installed we'll get feedback on how the hoses fit. :)

If the new slightly larger brass port fits stoutdogs factory hose nicely, we are good to go. If not, I will order some brass and drill/machine/thread from a solid piece.

Nelson15 has requested the brass, I will wait untill I hear back from stoutdog before I send nelson15's out w/ brass so I know if a smaller straight port is needed.

I'm going to be slicing all the cores up in the morning when I get off work (step 1). Time to start the next batch. I think we have 12 or so cores now so it'll be a busy morning. Hopefully this batch will go quickly. :)

If you want in on this batch, send your cores ASAP. Once all the tops are cut off and all the core surfaces are flycut flat, that closes the batch since I will be setting the lathe up to machine the round parts and don't want to go back and fourth. All cores received after that point will be in the next batch.

Sounds great Mark. Life got in the way on my core, but it finally headed your way this morning via priority mail flat rate. Feel free to use as a rotating core until you get to me on the list. I'd like the brass fittings (assuming all the testing works out). Let me know what I owe you when you get there.

If you send me a core ahead of time I will add it to the next batch and do your unit right away with the next batch (this one) and get it to you as soon as its finished.

The "waiting list" is mainly for the people "waiting" for a donated unit to be modified or for a core to return from someone that received a donated unit.

If payment might be an issue when it is complete and you need more time (I will contact you when it is complete), no problem, I will use it for someone else and can use the "someone elses" return core for your unit and see if you are ready for payment in the next batch. So on and so on.

There is no rush, there are plenty of other people willing to buy a complete unit and when swapped I can reuse their cores for your unit, etc.

This goes for anyone. Also, if you do not have a core and are near the top of the list and are not ready for payment, etc, I will just skip you that batch and ask again next batch.

Hope that all makes sense and I didn't confuse anyone. :dizzy:

Update:

The carnage in my garage is hillarious, total of 15 units all getting tops cut off at once. Just had to take a few pics and share. :frankie:

I almost cried as I cut the 3 BRAND NEW thermostat housings open. Roughly $300 in brand new units getting cut open for cores. Some people wanted to get in this next batch and sent me new ones. It DID offer some good insight though.

Originally I was thinking the thermostat springs were weak allowing the thermostat to fail open.

Getting to cut the new units open allowed for proof of this concept. It was obvious to me as tested the spring tension of all the old units and compared it to the tension of the new units that the metal had just fatigued and that it is the SPRING that is weakening over time on the factory thermostat and allowing the thermostats to open prematurely.

Another quick update:

:!: :!: :!: I noticed this with one of the thermostat cores: :!: :!: :!:

Image

It looks to me like there was definitely oil in the coolant at some time. Hopefully the core was from someone's bad engine, or the oil on it was from something that happened in the past, etc and its not a new problem. This could possibly be a head gasket gone in a spot between oil/coolant passage with the engine having oil mixed w/ the coolant. Or, possibly it had a head gasket go in the past and it is just a little oil that was stuck to parts here and there and it's fine now. A lot of possibilities, but it should be looked into.

Thankfully I marked all the cores with the engraver so I know who's it was and I sent them a PM.

Anyway, I'm done in the garage today, off to bed...working night shift again.

Check your messages to see if you got a PM from me.

- Mark

You make me laugh inside :D

The good news is that Step 1 is done, and yes, yours is down there somewhere. :) The bad news is my wife just ran over all the units while backing in the Charger... :JEEPIN: ...OOPS!!!

...Just kidding. :goink: Thankfully I thought ahead and picked them all up before I came in and took a shower. She just asked me..."you did pick those up right? Because I already backed the car in" as I showed here the photo of the hard work I completed.

Oil was probably mine - at about 30K miles my oil cooler gasket blew - dumped oil into the cooling system - got a new radiator - new overflow tank and about 5-6 flushes from the dealership (warranty) - still not all clean - there's some oil in the overflow tank.

At least I'm not worried about rust........ :)

Great to hear, I'm glad thats all it was and it wasn't a head gasket, that would be some $$$.

Yeah, I bet everything in there has a little bit of oil on parts here and there, but shouldn't hurt anything. :)

Most have asked for the 192º thermostat (I think only 1 person wanted a 180, but that was a spare in case he wanted to go lower temp towing), but I will ask everyone right before I ship the units out what they want in there and if they want a spare. I also include the part numbers and vehicle application list for the parts (rad hose, thermostat, water outlet) and what vehicle they came from yso you can replace anything yourself locally if you have an issue years down the road. I will also ask if you want brass fittings, plastic, or brass 90º elbow only when I get to that point for everyone.

The thermostats are about $10 for the 192º and $12 for the 180º from your local parts store or can be ordered online.

Here's the link to Autozone's website and pricing, they also have failsafe thermostats available for this application in 192º temp. I'm not sure if the link will work since I have vehicle loaded, etc and not sure if it keeps that info in the link:

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/1999-Hyundai-Accent/Thermostat/_/N-jd8m9Z8gctr?filterByKeyWord=thermostat&fromString=search

It's hard to keep up w/PM's on what options you all want so I may ask again as the units get ready. I started a database of what options, etc everyone wanted, but was spending too much time updating it and no time in the shop. lol That simply won't get anything done so its faster just to ask as I go on the units. :)

I finally now have all the parts/tools on hand to do the timing belt etc. etc. service. Plan to get to it in the next couple of months. I will then have a core thermostat to send to you. Hope you do another production run down the road.

You are providing a priceless service to the KJ CRD community.

Kap,

I commend you and thank you.

Question: what is your lead time now?

I am getting ready to do my timing belt and thermostat service and want to plan ahead.
