Hi all,
This was "shift point seeking/surging@1600-1800rpm" which can be viewed here:http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=58764,

but now it looks more likely to be a turbo rebuild as my darling partner drives over a mountain every day to work and has not been following the cool down/shut down procedure on arrival. Oh joy!

We are basically pulling about 20mph floored on even a moderate grade with lots of black smoke and a P0299.
Everything else is clean (air filter/Map sensor/new fuel filters/fresh oil change).

When I stuck my hand into the turbo to check the impeller for play, there is none side to side nor up and down, but probably @ a 32nd or less of an inch back and forth (It spins freely). I am used to gauging tolerances with my finger tips, so they play was very little, but it was there.

Aaarrhhgg. Know the frustration. Have same issues that get very expensive not to mention, I'm the one who "needs" to get this fixed asap. I for one, usually get better cooperation from my Chihuahua.

Sometimes you feel like a Noob! Sometimes you don't! :oops:

Got the new CAC hoses. Pulled the old ones off and low and behold! There was a big split in the driver's side hose! It was just under the sock so that I did not notice it when I pulled the ends off to inspect them.

Douh! :banghead:

I think I need to revisit the principles of Occam's Razor.

At least with the scare my Darling partner will be more observant with the turbo cool down procedure from now on.

# 4 on the noob list. As I mentioned I missed it until I took it off as it was under the sock so I immediately Assumed the worst case scenario and got geared up for a turbo rebuild. :oops:

At least I have the procedure in my head if I ever do need to rebuild one! :P

P.S. the code thrown was the P0299 "turbo underboost".
