4WD LOW usage question

I you are on dry pavement, and you need to pull someone out of a ditch for extra traction can or should we use 4 low?

If you are going straight, it should be ok. While in 4WD only drive forward and reverse (or very wide turns) until you can disengage, and you should be ok.

Although, I think it's extra torque you will get, not extra traction. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if you are spinning tires in 4Hi, they will also spin in 4Lo.

If torque is greater the traction your just spinning you tires

If you are stuck in 4hi, putting it into 4low will do nothing. But when pulling someone out on black top, its a good idea to put into low so it doesnt heat the tranny up so much. Just stay straight and remeber it takes the tcase awhile to come out of part time. I find it best to give it some gas and get rolling, then push it out of D into N while its still rolling. That usually does it for me.

Quick question. I know when you engage 4 wheel low you are supposed to go 2-3 mph and put the tranny in Neutral...then take the shifter from 2hi, through 4hi and firmly through neutral in 4 low. ...........Should the same be done when disengaging 4low? Meaning slow down again to 2-3 mph and put the tranny in Neutral and then take the shifter from 4lo through neutral to 4hi or 2hi?

Yep, just push it straight through, then roll a few feet in neutral before you put it back in gear. I've found that if you can get on an incline and just roll downhill a bit it makes shifting easier, it's easier to maintain the 2-3 mph.

You do not have to be rolling to go in or out, but it shifts alot better if you are. Sometimes if im sitting still i have to hold back on the lever and put it into D just to get the lever to stay in 4low. If i dont hold it back it pops back out.

It does that because you are trying to shift while not moving. When you pull the lever back, it pulls a spring and then the gear follows when it's synched, but when you do that when you are not moving, the spring pulls the lever back down.

Thats correct. When you shift the tcase, it doesnt actually shift it. It applies some force on the gears and waits until they line up.
