Turbochargers recover power that would otherwise be sent out the tailpipe and lost. Superchargers COST you power, in that a large portion of the power they add is needed simply to turn the supercharger.

For me, owning the CRD isn't about economy, maintenance costs or anything other than it's an absolute blast to drive. It handles like a go cart, just jumps when the go pedal is depressed vigerously, and I can not get that satifaction from a gasser liberty.

It servers double duty as my wifes DD and my tooling around the back country hunting or just exploring.

All in all, the CRD is a very rewarding ownership.

I Like my CRD alot. I have had to do some work on it, motor mount, TC, filter assembly, etc, but I actually like working on my cars in the drive way (in 70 deg weather that is). The dealership paid for the TC, but I had to pay for the MM. Hopefully I will be able to put 400k on mine. Also th ability to run bio is cool but I worry about clogging fuel filters. Although if you are saving $20 per fill-up it doesnt take long to pay for a fuel filter. My 2 cents is worth what you paid for it  .

I have 202000 mi on my 05. Changed timing belt at 171000 when water pump started to leak.
Yes, the oil is overpriced but I go 6000 between changes.
I still get in the 20's mpg even when the temp is below 0.
Diesels have good and bad points, the CRD is much harder to start when it gets cold, I think due to the way the system is programmed, my 93 Cummins doesn't have those issues.
Parts pricing is high, due to small quantity of sales and overseas engine build.
I am more concerned with the TC than the engine at this point.
Diesel is a life style choice-I happen to like it. 8)

Glad to hear some stories of timing belts going more than 100,00 miles. I also need a timing belt replacement.
At 140,000 mi., I guess I'm over due.
Looking for a competent reasonably priced dealer in the North East?

Here is a quote I have so fare in the Albany NY area. About 100mi from me.
To replace the following:
Timing belt
Serp belt
Timing cover gasket
Tensioner for timing belt
Thermostat and gasket
Upper and lower radiator hose
We also replaced a serp belt pulley that was loose
We also flushed out the antifreeze
Cost of repairs done $2380.00 plus nys tax.

I don't see another diesel out there in the US even if I could afford it to replace the CRD. The kind of mileage a diesel gets you'll be replacing the engine on a gasser not the timing belt.

Does anyone know of a competent reasonably priced dealer in the North East?

SLS,

Try these guys, they have successfully done timing belts on Liberty CRD's, and know all about the Vehicle.

Macedon Auto Center
2309 Macedon Center Rd
Palmyra, New-York 14522
(315)597-1494

You buy the parts including the water pump and they'll do the install for $600.00. does not include the thermostat work.

racertracer,
Thanks for the info 8)
I often see complaints of poor dealerships here on the forum.
It would be great if we had a listing and contact info of good dealers and diesel mechanics that have worked on CRD's posted here :!:
