 Post subject: Future of our CRDs

Any thoughts or predictions on the future of our CRDs? Am I right in thinking that they were only available from 2004-2008? I wonder what will happen as they are not getting any newer and their numbers must be starting to dwindle. So are they going to hold any value (I've looked at some prices online and it seems like most are still asking too much for them)? Are we all just going to hold on to them forever or just a few more years? Will be able to start picking them up cheap some day?

The CRDs were only sold in the USA from 2005-2006 and I believe it was only 10000 a year. And they will hold thier value very well atleast I believe so but I am not selling mine either way. And yes our numbers are dropping even though over seas they sold close to 100000 of the CRD "Cherokee ". I don't remember when they started though I know they started with the 2.5L and moved to the 2.8L. But the only issue we will run into eventually is finding parts but this is typical of any rare vehicle.

For giggles i used Google and searched for "1984 Jeep Cherokee Diesel" and got several hits.
What, you didn't know that Cherokees were available in the USA in the early 1980's with a Renault turbocharged diesel engine :JEEPIN:

Also North American Spec Liberty CRD's numbeered 14,000 total give or take a few. Supposably there were 11,000 05's made so there are more of them available.

6 months ago I did a price look up on KBB.com for mine when I bought it the asking price was $17,999. at the time I looked up the current retail it was over $21,000. today I had a guy at Royal Farms from a near by used car lot see me filling with diesel. he asked me about my Jeep then asked me if it was worth more then when I bought it. I told him what I seen and he told me today at auction they saw a 91 Jetta TDI with 75,000 miles sell for close to $4000. Diesel's are holding value better than gasser's are and always have.

Our parts are going to get hard to find and like now anything used only on the CRD might be a dealer item. I think as long as the CRD is sold and supported overseas Chrysler is going to make some parts availabe here too. they my be special order and with longer lead times than now but if I'm right we should still be able to get them.

Typical salesman :-)r There was no TDI in 1991. It might have been a 1991 ECOdiesel. It had things like a intake manifold the swirled the air for more complete combustion, a low pressure turbo to provide more air, not power for power but for cleaner burning. And a castlist lie our CRDs. The one I owned then sold to a friend and at ....457,000 miles a fellow drove two hundred miles to buy it for $1700 in 2003. So $4000 for a 75k 1991 Echo is not out of line. They are prime canditates for vegie conversions.

If you guys ever run out of parts, count on me. Heck, VM is right next door in Italy. I see more and more parts (not original but hey, they are cheap, well...at least for me) for the CRD coming on E-bay Europe, mostly from Germany and the UK.

The CRD was build from halfway 2001 (mine was build 08-2001) untill late 2007. Then VM changed the engine design a bit for the KK and JK. (both are build in Toledo, OH but you cannot get them... :furious: )

Current value $13.560...but that's because it's price new was $42k (and that's in US dollars, not Bolivian :jester: )

One "wildcard" in the discussion would be Fiat's recent purchase of a significant stake in VM Motori. If that results in any kind of greater parts availability, then we could only stand to benefit.
For the moment, I am enjoying mine.

I think we should be ok for parts thanks to our ability to find what we need here and being able to show up at the counter with part numbers. It is a little concerning how the price of parts like the turbos have been going up so much. I often wonder if there are many CRD owners out there that don't know about this site. They must be going crazy.

We are lucky Fiat jump on the VM wagon...Otherwise Tony probably needs the service of a secretairy to take care of his "exploding" PM box sooner or later... :mrgreen:

PS:Keep a eye on those cheap parts Tony! "Tony VM expartation" sounds goooooood! :wink:

Mopar parts prices have gone up accross the board. Not just for our CRD's. A time or two because of time restraints I've bought XJ parts from a dealer and I've gotten a extreme case of sticker shock :dead:
KJ related, not CRD specific, I bought a TPM sensor online a few years ago and it was under $20. Last time I checked from the same vendor they were just under $40. Yeah double and that's what I've seen with XJ parts too :dizzy:
