New to the forum. Bought an 05 CRD from a honda dealer a month ago. Read the noob guide, did the ORM,EHM & cleaned the MAP. Dealer used honda 5W-30 (said it was the same as Mobile 1). Jeep dealer recommends Mobile 1 0W-40 first choice, 5W-40 second. Nothing about turbo diesel specific oil. I've used Delo 400 15-W40 & Napa filters in my OLDER diesels. What do you more experienced owners use?

Thanks, Steve B.

I've owned several diesels throughout the years, Puegeot, V.W., Mercedes, Ford, GMC. Have always used Rotella Synthetic 5-40 since they've been making it and have had no issues. Filter, usually Napa or Wix.

Pleae avoid the Mobil 1 Ow-40 oil, its a weak diesel oil. Your best bet is any diesel 5w-40. I use Mobil 1 and Rotella 5w40 interchangeably in my CRD.

I would have to say use Rotella T6 5w40 its the synthetic they are talking about in the blue bottles or jug with a quality filter. I prefer Napa Gold or Pure One. if you have a Wal-manrt they have the oil in gallons for $19.50 in my area and $6.12 per quart.

Why buy Mobil1 0-40 for $8 bucks per quart, and it's not even diesel engine rated....when for $19.50 you can buy a gallon of Rotella T6 that IS diesel engine rated and will make the $7,000 engine in your rig happy?

That's just stupid to use an oil that's for gas engines. If you're going to do that, you might as well get a Fram filter to go with it. :-)r

Yeah it's on the back of the bottle. Right there where it says nothing about a CI or greater rating...and our engines are CI engines...yeah that's all you need to know. I wouldn't put that stuff in my engine if they actually paid ME to do it.

When someone says data, here is an example of what they are looking for (so you know in the future):

From your 2005 Liberty owners manual:
Quote:
MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE (Page)315

Engine Oil Selection (Diesel Engines)
For best performance and maximum protection for all
engines under all types of operating conditions, the
manufacturer recommends using synthetic engine oils
that are API Certified (SL/CF), and meet the requirements
of DaimlerChrysler Material Standard MS-10725.
Engine Oil Viscosity (2.8L Diesel Engines)
Use SAE 0W-40 Mobil 1 Synthetic Engine Oil that
meets API categories CF or better and the requirements
of DaimlerChrysler Material Standard MS-10725. If you
cannot find SAE 0W-40, then SAE 5W-40 Mobil 1
Synthetic Engine Oil is acceptable. Any engine oil that
does not meet the manufacturer’s requirements should
not be used.

http://www.onlinefreeebooks.net/autos/c ... l-pdf.html

From the Mobile 1 web site:
Quote:
Specifications and Approvals

Mobil 1 0W-40 meets or exceeds the requirements of:

API SM/SL/SJ/CF
ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... 0W-40.aspx

Now that wasn't too hard was it? 2 minutes of Google and 4 minutes of cut and paste. That's what we call "data".

Now please go trolling on another forum (maybe a "Mobile 1" forum).......

What a smart *** little d*uche. I guess I'm going to have to go to the local store and take a photo of the Mobil1 bottles they have on the shelf, huh? Just so that you'll believe me when I say you have to be careful to get a DIESEL oil because not all of it is.... But just for you, I might do that.

Very good! You did learn something while you were trolling here, :D that picture would be an example of data.

I'll wait right here till you get back to us with that.

Oh, BTW, do you even know what SL/CF means when it's printed on the bottle? Because if your looking for the absence of the words "for diesel engines" printed on that bottle as support for your claim, you're not going to be disappointed, but.....

Quote:
There are six diesel engine service designations which are current: CJ-4, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-2, and CF. Some manufacturers continue to use obsolete designations such as CC for small or stationary diesel engines. In addition, API created a separated CI-4 PLUS designation in conjunction with CJ-4 and CI-4 for oils that meet certain extra requirements, and this marking is located in the lower portion of the API Service Symbol "Donut".

It is possible for an oil to conform to both the gasoline and diesel standards. In fact, it is the norm for all diesel rated engine oils to carry the "corresponding" gasoline specification. For example, API CJ-4 will almost always list either SL or SM, API CI-4 with SL, API CH-4 with SJ, and so on.

I don't want to get in the middle of a peeing match here but Rotella T6 meets API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, C4, SM, SL, SH; ACEA E9; Caterpillar ECF-3, ECF-2; Cummins CES 20081; DDC 93K218; Ford WSS
M2C171-E; JASO DH2, MA; Mack EO-0 Premium Plus; MAN 3275; MB Approval 228.31; Volvo VDS-4

SO it meets that API SL requirement and the other Diesel stantards like CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CH-4, and C4 are new standards than CF so I don't see how Rotella can be bad. Plus Mobile 1 0w40 is like mad hard to find for me, I dont know one place that stocks it here now. I seen it at pep boys once but they didn't have it the last time I was there. I can find Mobile 1 turbo diesel truck 5w40.

dslranger: look what you've started.

I don't want to get in the middle of a peeing match either but I do have a thought to add here. I am no expert but i am under the impression that oil reommendations are heavily based on what is best for our turbos. So with all the blown CRD turbos we are seeing around here, I wonder if it would be interesting to find out what oil (0-40 or 5-40) the turbo victims were using. Maybe we could find a relationship there. :?:

Avoiding a brand debate, it seems like 30 weight oils keep popping up. The recommended weights are either 0w-40 or 5w-40, but I have seen many people list 5w-30.

In fact, I was at my local Firestone for a NY state inspection (required every year) and their information had 5w-30 for an oil change. (They are always trying to push extra work.) I do as much work on the CRD as I can myself, and oil changes are very simple with the Fumoto valve.

Where does the 30 weight oil recommendation come from? Is that what a Liberty gasser uses?

If you change it every 3,000 I don't think it matters what kind of engine oil you use. Keeping it full seems to be the problem around here. If your running 12,000 miles beteween changes as the owners manual states you can, I would use the recommended oil in the manual.

I would, for the most part, agree with that statement as long as it is a "C" rated oil (for diesels). There are many very excellent non-"C" rated oils out there, but don't put them in the diesel.

As long as you use a CF or higher rated "C" oil in the CRD, it doesn't matter what "brand" you use. As far as I can tell, only oil consumption, fuel consumption and being able to start the thing in cold temps (too thick oil) may be an issue if you use a different weight rating other than specified. This is all assuming that you change the oil in a timely interval (let the debate begin with that! :juggle: ).

Bottom line: Using a non-"C" rated oil in a diesel, especially in a turbo unit, is bad....OK.

Idid'nt realize I was opening up a can of worms, but thanks for all of the opinions any way. Has any one tryed the mobile 1 M1-301 as recommended in the noob guide? I only have the front skid plate & it looks like I might have clearance for a larger filter.
