in FT's defense, while the statement about the extermination may not sound reasonable, he handled my response in a reasonable and respectful manner

he could have a justified reason for feeling the way he does, no reason to jump up and down on anyone's head

it's an opinion, whether others agree with it or not they're allowed to have it

;)

I obviously didn't mean it literally. That could never happen even if someone tried. BTW, I'm not ignorant. Pit Bulls, or American Pit Bull Terriers, or any of the other names that the same breed have, do get a bad rap. A lot of it is deserved. I would much rather have a 100 bites from one of the little knee biters than 1 by a Pit Bull. It isn't the number of bites it IS the severity of the bite.

Yes, it has hit close to home so to speak. A friends 5 year old daughter. The dog (Pit Bull) was a "poster child" of the well behaved and loving family pet. The dog was sleeping in the living room and the girl left the kitchen table to go to the bathroom, passing through the living room. She was a nice little girl...RIP!

I still do not like getting anywhere near a pit that I do not know. My leg hurts just thinking about it.(I will never forget that one bite). All I have to do is look at my thigh that will away's be deformed a little.

yikes FT, i knew there was somethin there

girl i dated fora bit in HS stepped on the paw of the families am. mastiff while it was sleeping, pretty much same sort of scenario - she was about 6 or so, lost a good chunk of the side of her cheek next to her eye - was very obvious to the family that was present that the dog didn't mean to nor realize what was going on when it happened - APS allowed the dog to be adopted by a family that had no kids so it ended up becoming a farm dog

i'm lucky that all of my bites were as superficial as they were and just required irrigation and soaking with epsons and a daily bandage with some kerosene or vaseline

there's really only two things that get away with me in terms of people and their animals

1. their training or lack of
2. and acting like they "Own" the animal which typically involves a lack of respect for what the animal is capable of

in my unprofessional opinion, some people deserve to get bitten.. unfortunately they're usually not the one's who end up injured or killed and that's where I'd honestly support that licensing thing Tony said

it sucks that our country, as involved as it is in the international community (good or bad..) typically learns little from other countries mistakes that result in proven techniques in how to properly manage something

I guess that's one of those "Just Sayin" statements.. even though i detest that phrase

Logical, neither would I. I have that same thing with timing belts. Everytime I touch one, the hair in my neck stands up and I get a little nocious. I lost a piece of my rh indexfinger years ago between a camsprocket and a timing belt (freak accident).

Back on track: Our dogs also have a chip implanted.(Mandatory, or no license. No chip: illegal dog) Cops and animal rescue workers or every Vet has a scanner. So they can scan your dog and your details pop up in a computer database. Good thing if they ever get lost for example.

Also, if they get into an accident or bite someone, the owner can be traced back because of that chip. That makes you as owner very aware of liability. Maybe that would be a good start for responsible dogownership if that was mandatory for all dogs...(overhere only for PDD, possibly dangerous dogs)

With my job I run into a lot of pits that have been trained to do bad things. These of course are illegal to have on the properties that I am looking at. So they get written up.

But I have owned two Pit Bulls and a Doberman, all were brought up the right way. While they were all very protective of me, they all were great dogs with or around anyone. Never even hardly barked unless there was a problem outside.
Yes they do have those genes in them to become mean, but so do humans, its all on how they were raised and cared for.

I wasnt aiming my statements at anyone specific. Just hate seeing a breed of dog be generalized as bad. Humans kill things all the time, and those bad people that murder and rape usually had some sort of goof while growing up. Since there are so many rapes and murders are humans as a whole bad? No. Hence why I hate lumping all those good pits (the majority) into the MUST DIE! category.

As for the most vicious breeds, I would say Dalmatians are probably the most irritable and quick to snap at you breed that I have experienced. I have seen that breed brought up well and cared for and loved yet still snip and bite people unprovoked.

Hell yea! A friend of mine had one that would lick and play like a puppy, then snap at you for no reason. Obedience training helped, but she would still bite if she got over excited or nervous.

I love that you brought this up! If we are going to exterminate a breed of animal for being somewhat violent, than your right, we might as well go around exterminating our own kind. People who think dogs are violent, and not their owners, should spend some time watching the Dog Whisperer. A strong leader is what's needed for a dog to obey and be docile, regardless of breed. (Of course, I've only owned a Lab, A Yorkie, a Pekingnese, and a Daucshand. For your information, the pekingnese was the most aggressive of those for us to break of.) (Luckily they have to put their whole face on something to bite!)

I couldnt agree more. I think its a funny thing hearing him say pack leader, but its true. Treat them like family but also let them know whos boss. My boxer will rip your head off if you seriously attack any friends, family, or my wife and I. But have my 2 year(or any kid for that matter) old niece pull on his ear or step on him while he is sleeping or the usual toddler abuse and that is met with kisses and a wagging tail.

Its all in nurture. Nature wise they were a great match for us before we breed and domesticated them over the past several thousand years.
