Whether it's Wyo Tech or Whatchamacallit in Tenn. that a few fellow diesel mechs of mine went for their practical app stuff, investigate the school and by all means, talk to people who actually went there to see what they thought about their experience. It's usually pretty easy to track down "alumni" of tech schools especially if they've certed up.

Get an idea of what you actually want to do ultimately. I left career mechanics because I stopped enjoying it even working in engine test cells made me want to do something else, so I did.

Leave the general technician stuff to those who have no aspiration to do anything but, and try to shoot for something specific eg. Engine Test Cell Technician/Engineer for Navistar 11 & 13L diesels just for example, then ask them what schools or certs are important to them and go get them and maintain contact with that company during the process.

Navistar came to me recently but I honestly have no desire to go back to career mechanics.

There's plenty of opportunity out there for "non-blackhand" mechanics particularly for non-service applications where it involves "clean-room" assembly or testing

Although, I wouldn't give up those years or experience for anything else. I truly enjoyed it, while I enjoyed it.
