245/70R17 (I made my decision with pics)

My stock tires still have 8/32 tread depth left, but I want to think about buying a new set of tires. I'm looking for a good all-terrain set of tires in 245/70R17. All the tires listed below are "standard load" tires. I don't want a LT tire. Let me know what you guys/girls think about this list.

General Grabber AT 2

Firestone Destination A/T

Michelin LTX A/T 2

NITTO Terra Grappler

Toyo Open Country A/T

I like the general grabber At 2. Thats the ones i was on the way to get put on the libby yesterday when things went up in smoke. He had to ship them in from Nebraska. They are holding them for me until next weekend.

I have always liked the looks of the Nittos. However, I have never had them, and have heard a lot of people say they ride like crap. I think the Grabbers or the Toyos would be your best bet of the ones listed.

Yeah, I have the Toyo’s on my XJ, and so far I like them.

It seems that people on this forum really like the Firestones. Nitto is the sister company to Toyo, and I’ve always heard good things about them. I’m surprised that you heard that they “ride like crap”. What does “ride like crap” mean?

I have a buddy that has had 2 sets on his 1/2 ton Chevy and 1 ton Ford. Both sets rode very rough and had a very hard time getting balanced. Had vibrations at highway speed. When he switched to other tires, all the problems went away.

Gesh, that’s not good. :banghead:

I’ll be putting 6 ounces of dynabeads in each tire, so I’m sure the beads would help with any significant balancing issues. Typically Nitto and Toyo are known for easy balancing. I wonder if your buddy got some bad luck? I know a lot of people who seem to love them.

I have Toyos on my Tahoe, 285/75's. They are overall pretty good, but not greatest on wet grass and pack up pretty quick in sticky mud, but clean out real quick with a quick tap on the skinny pedal. I would consider them again. I have approx 30K with another 10 probably to go and that's on a 6-6500# rig.

airsoft pellets won't keep the nitto's from chunking

Nitto's are/were large with the small lift GC crowd

first 10-15k miles they'ed be all smiles and stuff..

then.. came the frowns, and swearing

as for the dozen or so nitto owners I've known, they were all one time owners with a few exception of guys who just cut tires too fast to get them chunking

but it's a good pattern for that style tire, that in mind, the toyo should be a good tire for that style application
haven't heard any chunking issues with the toyo's, I assume there is a compound difference between the two tires - and it MAY have been one that was resolved

I just don't like being the one to find out, know what i mean?

I ran the Destination ATs for about twenty thousand miles back in 04-early 05
very quiet, balanced great, rode real good and did well in snow and ice
of course not so good in mud but for a mainly street DD I'd buy them again

What no Cooper discoverer ST? I have them and love them my brother has a set Generals and they are loud on his toyota tacoma. Nittos have weak side wall sliced a set up pretty bad in a rock garden on my buddies FJ 80. Needless to say 2 of them didn't survive the rest of the day after that.

I have experience with the Firestone, Toyo, and General you have listed there. This is the order I'd put them in:

1.) Firestone
2.) Toyo
3.) General

They are all excellent tires...but the Firestone wins because it's quiet, inexpensive, fuel efficient, and digs good in the snow.

The General is loud, heavy, and sucks fuel. But...it's rugged and durable and inexpensive.

The Toyo is an awesome road tire. Lightweight, good fuel economy, great in the rain and snow. Almost can't even make them spin if I try. But, the tread width is too narrow on the 245s and looks a little goofy. They look much better in the wider sizes. They are also expensive, and the sidewalls must be weak because the max PSI rating is the lowest I've ever seen on a AT tire in my life.

I will be buying another set of Firestone Destination A/Ts this fall if I do not a lift. If I do the lift, then I will be buying the Firestone Destination M/Ts. The A/Ts have been excellent in the snow and all the rain we get during the rest of the year.

I vote Toyo. Unless you would consider Treadwright. Maybe take a look at the Sentinels. I just ordered a set of them for my Suburban.

My Toyos have a 65psi rating, but then I have "man" sizes and load range D's :goink:

Only Firestone/Bridgestone tire I would buy would be the Dayton brand, but they have tamed the treads down for better road use on the AT's so I don't buy them anymore. But compared to the tires you posted, they may fit what you want, they are similar to the destination tread.

Okay, I decided to take the Michelin LTX A/T 2’s off the list. I read some reviews on the Michelin LTX A/T 2’s and overall the reviews were very positive. Most everyone agreed that the higher price for the Michelins were well worth it as the tire seems to last forever. I’m not sure if the higher price/longer mileage tire would benefit me. I only put 4,000 - 6,000 miles per year on each Jeep; therefore, the Michelins would be dry-rotting by the time they needed to be replaced. With our lack of humidity, clean blue skies, and close proximity to the sun, rubber does and will breakdown faster. Even valve stems go bad after a certain number of years. Based on that decision, I’m now down to these two tires:

Firestone Destination A/T

Toyo Open Country A/T

I'm running the Toyos now and I've run the Firestones before... since you are down to just those two tires, I'd say go with the Firestone. It's less expensive, and it tends to wear down a little faster than a lot of AT tires do which is exactly what it sounds like you need. They are quiet and grip well. I've even had them in a mud pit (by accident) and managed to get out on my own power with the Firestones.
