I have been very seriously considering purchasing my wife a liberty CRD. She is a residential appraiser and lately she is required to travel farther distances for work. She is currently driving an explorer and getting 12-14mpg. She burns about 80-100 gallons of regular a month. I was hoping the additional mileage in the liberty would ease our fuel costs.

Secondly, with this purchase I am considering starting to homebrew biodiesel. I have an 01 cummins and an 03 powerstroke, so with the jeep that would make all of our rigs diesel. I have found a steady supply of oil, anywhere form 80-100 gallons per month, maybe more if i can find one more supplier. The questions I have are as follows:

How much time will it take me to brew 100 gallons a month??? Not including picking up the oil. Just production time? I don't want this to turn into brewing bio everynight for weeks on end just to save a few bucks.

Are you able to just put the oil and the appropriate ingrediants in the processor and walk away for a while or do you need to monitor it?

What would everyone recommend for building a homebrew setup. I have seen alot of info on the "appleseed setup"

Do you have to pay taxes on the fuel??

Thanks!!!! :!:

good questions.

for time..it take me about 3 hrs total time to make a batch. not all that time is needed in one block of time.
how many batches are needed to make 100 gallons? depends on processor size. if you're going to use 100 gallons of oil you need at least 130 gallon tank.

yes for the most part.

I have 3 setups. I've been making for a long time..the setup tend to grow. currently 2 85 gallon cone bottom tanks and 1 80 gallon water heater. the water heater doubles for methanol recovery.

cost to make runs about $0.70 per gallon plus the cost of the oil.

I converted my Jeep Liberty to run on SVO. I use a centrifudge to clean th oil. It cost me $1100 to covert to grease. We use about 1 gallon of diesel for start up and shut down every 80-100 miles. On long trips it is more like 200 miles. Filtering the grease is easy next to making biodiesel. But I am working on making biodiesel also since at $4 a gallon diesel is getting expensive. The ideal set-up is biodiesel is the diesel tank and veg in the veg tank. We have two vehicles that run on SVO. We burn 50 gallons a week between us.

Not sure that is going to help you any.

How long do you expect that EHM to take [referencing your sig]? Just curious.
