I have been reading a few posts lately about others having problems with their cruise control, but my problem is one in it's own league. I should state that I believe the jeep is upset with me for bringing her home with me to the North from her former home in the sunshine state. I have been having some electrical gremlins and am not the greatest when troubleshooting electrical although I am trying to get better.

So here is the deal. I can go out and start the jeep and I can turn on the cruise control (cruise light comes on). If I leave my house and get above the minimum set speed I can set my cruise and she will go with no problem. However, if I leave my house and drive city streets for a while with the cruise light on, but cruise not set, the cruise light will go off after about 2 minutes more or less. I feel like it more of a timed result (i.e. constant to time) rather than distance. I also have left the jeep to warm up with the cruise light on and it will be off when I get back in to leave. Here is the strange part. I can drive it and after the cruise light goes out I will stop at a light before the expressway entrance ramp. I will then turn off the jeep and put it in park and let it sit for a few minutes. Stop light turns green, start up the jeep, and turn on cruise and then set cruise once on the highway. I did this and drove it back from Mansfield (1 1/2 hrs) and the cruise stayed set. So that is my dilema hopefully someone will be able to help me out and offer some insight.

I don't mind driving with my foot for now, but the 1700 mile trip to Moab in May would be very unpleasant without cruise. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it's working o.k. to me. If you think it's not, try disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes and it may reset if there's something wrong.

I believe that my first post was confusing so I will give it another shot.

Start jeep > Cruise light can be turned on by on/off button > drive jeep less than 1 mile > cruise light goes out on its own and cannot be turned back on....Unless

Turn off jeep > wait approximately 1-2 min > restart jeep > cruise light can be turned on again by on/off button > wait short period of time without setting cruise > cruise light goes off on it's own > repeat cycle.

Cruise can be turned on, set, and used as normal if set within a short time of starting the jeep, but there is only a small window of opportunity to set before the cruise light will go off and not allow you to set the cruise.

It is not working properly.

1st you should never drive around with the cruise light on and not have the cruise set,could be your whole problem.

I believe that is in reference to when the speed control is actually set (ie jeep maintaining the desired speed). The cruise light from what I understand only indicates that the speed control system is on, not necessarily controlling the vehicles speed. I do not usually turn on the system while I am not intending to use it, but have been doing so in an effort to deduce the improper functioning of the cruise control system. The problem was first brought to light when attempting to use the cruise control on the highway and the cruise light would not come one. This would signify the system is not turning on, therefore not allowing me to actually set the cruise.

why would you turn cruise on if you're not going to use it almost immediately? just leave it turned off until you're getting ready to use it. I don't even bother to turn the system on until I'm on the highway. I'm also one of those paranoid people that will turn it off if I'm not reactivating it relatively soon, as I'm always nervous it'll take control again on it's own. I had a car that used to do that... if you'd disengage (but not turn off) cruise by pressing the brake pedal, then held the set speed on your own for about 15 seconds it would automatically re-engage cruise! while some might find that to be a "feature" I find that to be quite honestly frightening... what if it gets wrong sometimes, decides "oh hey it's time for me to take control again" and you're not anywhere NEAR the speed it's set to? can you say toyota-like sudden acceleration?

I agree. I do not usually drive around with the cruise control on, but I am currently unable to turn on my cruise when I try to use it once on the highway. In my first two posts I was attempting to recap the trouble shooting that I had already done in order to be further along but that may have been a mistake.

Starting over:

When I try to use cruise on the highway the light will not turn on. What could be wrong?

Happens every once in a while on mine. Smashed the wheel with my fist until it started working again. Its a wire somewhere in there thats loose. After it being on and off working wise for a while and being into the dealership i pounded it good one time and it's been consistently working

I will disconnect the battery and while I am at it check out the wiring inside the steering wheel to see if I find any problems. I'll report back on what I find.

Well I found the problem.... I was getting to the point of getting plain annoyed with my electrical problem along with wanting to remove the spliced-in flat tow wiring kit the PO put on. So I decided to remove the flat tow wiring kit and go from there. During the removal process which did include both bumper fascia's and the grill I found the culprit to my electrical woes. I noticed that on my trailer wiring harness that my tail light converter box looked a little expanded, by this I mean bulging. In order to test the circuit I removed the factory wiring circuit pigtail and everything worked just fine.

So in conclusion my tail light converter box was shorted out and was actually burning inside the plastic which was causing crazy electrical problems that ranged from blowing my drivers side parking lamp fuse, activating my four ways when only a turn signal was turned on, and not being able to turn on let alone set my cruise control. Now that I have this problem solved it is on to the next electrical problem I am not experiencing.

If anyone is having electrical problems with tail lights and turn signals and such, after checking all bulbs and bulb connections and not seeing any visible problems a quick test of the trailer wiring harness, if you have one, may be worth your while. Hope this helps others in the future.
