I did some leg work and searched for pricing in my area for a timing belt change since i will be due for one before the winter comes.

This is for your information and what I encountered.

I have received the following 4 quotes for my scheduled 100,000 mile timing belt change from 2 dealers and 1 independent mechanic who works on Jeeps. All related parts included.
Dealers offer a guarantee on parts and labor for a year, the independent mechanic does not.

- In March 2010 dealer #1 quoted me $1200.00.

- In June 2010 same dealer #1 re-quoted me $1600.00 - $400.00 more this time because he forgot to add for gaskets and miscellaneous other parts which he couldn’t remember what they were at the time but could provide this information when the work is complete.

- In July 2010 dealer #2 quoted me $1000.00 out the door and for $100 more he would include a new thermostat. All necessary parts and labor included with a year’s warranty. So $1100.00 total including the thermostat.

- In August 2010 an independent jeep mechanic who has worked on CRD’s before and has worked on mine, quoted me $800.00 - $900.00 parts included but no guarantee.

If I order the all parts myself the total would be $634.00 shipping from Mopar Parts America.com.

Conclusion: I will go with dealer number 2 even though he is located 30 miles away from me but who has done 4 previous timing belts on CRDs with a qualified diesel mechanic. His price is reasonable and it includes a guarantee.

Motto of this story is: Shop around, find the best price, use a qualified mechanic, make sure that you're getting OEM parts and a guarantee.

Or if you are handy and know what you’re doing then doing the job yourself would be the best option.

Was the inside of the first dealer's nose burned out from doing a white powder up his nose?
$400 extra for gaskets and forgotten items when you can get parts for $634 sounds very fishy.
Sometimes dealers high ball the price when they don't want the job.
Dealer #1 may be taking the CRD to dealer #2 and marking up the job to make the margin.
Does any one know the flat rate for the timing belt job?

Good luck and make sure they don't flash your ECM and screw it up.

$1,200 isn't too far off the mark for a dealer (its what I was quoted after they give me a good-guy discount :wink: ). This job can have a HUGE parts price swing depending on how many other pulleys and belts you replace going in and coming out. As for me, replace it all. This is not an easy job unless you do this for a living and there are many OSM moments if your not careful.

I bought the parts, my mechanic did the work, took his time (3 days) and just finished the job. He is charging me $750 in labor. While he was at it I had him replace the alternator AND this includes changing out #4 glow plug (this is not an "up-charge, I knew both were bad).

He is in SE of Indy about 25 miles. If you want him to work on your rig (I think he will though he normally repairs foreign cars, loves diesel mercedes and repairs Spinter cans too), PM me and I will send you his contact info.

I lived by Mitchell's labor guide for years and most of the time they were fair.
Looks like Dealer #2 is fair and #1 is supporting some kind of habit or making boat payments.
I know all about overhead, it eats you alive and every time you turn around some parasite like insurance, garbage fees, disposal fees, or other regulations take another bite out of you. Another aspect about running a small business that I do not miss at all, are the competitors who sponge off their Wife's health insurance, income, and other perks so they can under cut every one else. Companies like SnapOn love these guys so they can make them carry a lot of stock and have them work for cheap while selling their good but very high priced tools.

I got the parts from parts.com. Found everything there but the water pump. The good is that they sell only Mopar stuff, the bad is that it’s a little pricey… I got the water pump from FourWheelerHB.com for 113 + 15 shipping, brand new, not refurb. That’s the best price I found. I did not change the water pump and thermostat, water pump bearing seemed fine and I’ll change the thermostat when I will replace the coolant in few days. I ended up doing it myself because I couldn’t find somebody I could trust enough. Most mechanics run away when hearing the word diesel.
To sum it up, I paid only for parts a little over 1,000, plus shipping (100+, don’t remember exactly), but I got a little more than the minimum necessary. Timing belt job only parts would be about 550. If anyone interested, I could follow up with parts #.
Below is a summary of the expenses for parts, for whoever is interested. I replaced the engine damper also, since it is an important part and protects crankshaft for extra wearing.

I am heading to Germany for a few weeks and there is no better time to get it done. I don't have the time to do it. This is the first major repair on a car I have not done in 20 years.

Lost Junkie, Can you post the name of the dealer who has already done 4 diesel timing belts. I'm getting close to doing mine. Had a dealer lined up near me but they just went out of business. Might be worth the drive up to CT. Thanks,

But they are highly qualified and i bought all of my parts from mopar for 413.00 excluding thermostat, thermo gasket, andtiming belt. But we shall see how much it ends up costing me hopefully less considering they supposedly have thier "Best" mechanic working on it. Hopefully he can get it done quickly so i can get the passenger CV replaced and get out of the Mini Cooper S and back into my Jeep.

I just got these times from Mitchell 1 online and you can see how the times are mixed up. You know you have to remove the inner timing covers for the water pump but the water pump time is listed less than the timing cover. I think the first dealer is looking at the whole scope of the job with the water pump is going to take almost 7 hours. If it's just belt and idlers it's much cheaper but have to add .1 for idlers and tensioner. If the shop charge 100 per hour, that will be almost 700 for labor. I don't know how many parts your going to get for 400 when you said your cost was 634. Maybe you should verify the whole scope of the job you want done from each.

I think it would be great to have a sticky with a list and contact info for highly qualified mechanics to work on CRDs.

My local Jeep dealer closed down, so I just went to another. They said book for the timing belt replacement was 6.3 hours. I just ordered the parts (belt, 2 pulleys and the tensioner) for $390 on line. So it looks like around $1000 for the entire job. Any guidance from anyone on the water pump? Replace it? Or if it ain't broke, don't fix it?

Now, the MUST for the timing belt is the timing belt, the timing belt tensioner and the 2 timing belt pulleys. If any of those fail, you damage the engine. My opinion is to also change the water pump, especially if you are not a do it yourselfer, because half of the work in replacing it is done by taking apart the stuff for the timing belt. It may be possible (and very likely) for the water pump to fail before the next timing belt change interval (200K), and you will have to pay the work again, so why risking and not doing it cheaper now? Just my 2 cents...

Also, from what i remember from Jeep manual (and I may be wrong) the serpentine belt should be replaced every 50K. so that would be due for a change too, and why not doing it now if you have everything apart?

Regarding thermostat, I did not change it when I did the timing belt, saying that if it is good why bother. Then in late oct, when weather got colder, guess what, lol, the engine would not heat up, so i ended up changing it too. But thermostat is definitely a job that can be done separate than the belt.

Engine dampner (1- Pulley, liberty - 2.8l diesel 2005 (this is the damper) $159.85) is definitely recommended, but not neccessary. If you like to "baby" your car like I do, then go the extra mile and do it. That part will be also taken out from the engine when you do the timing belt and this is relatively important because if it is not perfectly ballanced (think like a wheel ballance) it adds extra wear and tear to the crankshaft, thus accelerating the end of the engine.
