I just turned over 100,000 miles and looking for someone the timing belt / water pump / thermostat replacement in the southern US. I'm in Oxford, Mississippi, about 60 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. LOST members prefered (will compensate!) and I'll help as much as needed. I can travel as far as St. Louis, Atlanta, or New Orleans areas. Haven't bought everything yet but will soon. Thanks!

Sounds like a party, and Savannah is well known for the plethora of... "refreshments" available. I have the full set of Miller tools, the only thing I dont have is experience pulling the water pump. I didnt mess with mine.

As I'm recently retired (35 years was long enough) I can make anytime in June work just let me know when and where and what to bring in addition to willing hands. I'd be inclined to replace the water pump once you are in that far although there has been some chat, don't know if it has been confirmed, to the effect that the water pump service life is like 200,000m. I don't recall anyone commenting on a water pump failure for that matter.

Just an FYI, I found the cheapest price on the belt from Amazon - IIRC, it was like $70, for a genuine GATES brand.

Not that I'm encouraging anyone to follow in my own insanity, but I didn't change the pulleys or the tensioner either. Keith at GDE was telling me that he believes the tensioner spring is not something that will wear out, but that it would be the bearings. The indication was *if* they started ejecting grease, then it would be time to replace. Looking at all of my pulleys and the tensioner, they all moved smooth and solid, no grease or degradation present at all.

In another thread (a very long one on timing, IIRC) PATRACY did some great research on those idler pulleys and discovered that the standard accessory pulley from a dodge truck (sorry, he didn't say which year / model) had the SAME outer diameter of the pulley, and same shaft diameter... And that they were metal instead of the plastic of our pulleys. Even better... They were like $15, instead of the $50 of the plastic pulleys. If you want to explore that route, contact PaTracy for more info.

Knowing my engine the way I do, I opted to listen for a pulley starting to howl as an indication of its impending bearing failure... Rather than give up on perfectly good parts. Obviously, I'm capable of digging back into the engine with the tools to replace these if needed. For anyone else... YMMV.

I don't know about driving down there, I don't think my old bones can withstand the long drive anymore.

I once drove my wrangler from CT to Panama Beach FL and back again and I swore that I would never do it again, even though I had a blast.

Very funny. My sister would be ecstatic about that, as she calls them "Eco-friendly cars" and wants to get one when she gets a 2-bedroom ground floor on Central Park West. One bedroom for her, the second as a lovely box stall.

Yea, the rest of my family thinks she's nuts too. Besides, Savannah is full of those carriage things, clogging up the already bad traffic. That, and the emissions are too polluting for my taste anyway. :ROTFL:

I don't know when I'm back in The City... Possibly this fall if I get stuck moving my sister's crap up there after she graduates. I'll let you know.

June 18th works for me as spectator/junior assistant trying to learn how for the future.

geordi - I assume you have a compressor, although I can borrow a pancake one if need be. If so I'm considering purchasing the Lisle Pneumatic Fan Clutch removal tool to bring to the party unless you already have one. It looks like this makes fan removal really simple, which would help those doing timing belts, and I could go ahead and install kap's fixed fan mod for which I already have the parts. I assume the fan shroud has to come out while doing the timing belt, if so is it worth considering doing the fan shroud mod posted at http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/sho ... hp?t=76201 (scroll way down for picture) while the shroud is out as it would sure make future serp belt and fan access easier. Drop me a PM or email.

I do have a compressor, as well as some basic impact socket wrenches. You are correct about the shroud needing to come out, due to a PHENOMENALLY bad design, you have to have elfin arms to get around the stupid shroud to remove the fan, and they BOTH have to come out at the same time.

I haven't returned my fan OR shroud to the engine bay since that job, and have not seen my temp gauge rise above dead center either. I'd be happy to talk at length about that and that shroud mod (which I also can support for those inclined) when everyone is here.

I had an idea about the fan removal from one of the previous threads about the timing job, but if there is a special tool that would make it happen, I'm all for that too if you want to bring it.
