mopar online parts has them at 170 including a 40 core charge.

parts train has a remaf for 122 with a 58 core charge.

See what happens with the extended warranty. Should be an interesting week either way.

The fact that the starter spins when you jump the solenoid means that your basic problem is that you are not getting power to the solenoid under normal conditions....that is the problem you need to trace....I doubt it is the starter motor!

This type of starter motor uses a lever in the solenoid that pulls out a gear to engage the flywheel or TC. At this point the solenoid makes a large contact which supplies 12 volts to the starter motor to turn it. This is not the type of starter motor that has an inertia gear that flies out to engage the flywheel as the starter turns...this is the type of starter system that Bendix invented. So if the starter motor is spinning but not engaging then it is probably the solenoid but I still believe your fault is in getting power to the solenoid in the first case.! :?

Edit to add: I think you probably jumpered the wrong connections on your solenoid together; you probably jumpered the +12 volts thick cable from the battery direct onto the starter motor and bypassed the solenoid completely so of course the motor will run without engaging! I tried to see the connections on my 2002 2.5 CRD but they are a bit difficult to get to without getting dirty all over. :?

But if the starter spins when the solenoid is jumped (I presume the ignition is on) doesn't that mean the solenoid is getting power? If so is it possible the solenoid is bad. That said this chain started with the primary symptom being turn key to crank position and there is no sound from the starter and no solenoid click. Other systems function normally including the radio and fans going out when the key is turned to the crank position. The latter suggests the ignition is functioning normally and a relay swap test was done so we can presume the relay is not the issue. Diagnostics for this sort of no start are on page 8F-48 of the 2006 Liberty FSM but, as I noted earlier, my personal favorite is a bad or out of adjustment park/neutral position switch. Diagnostics for that are on page 9-496 of the same FSM. Unfortunately I cannot find any hint in either the FSM or parts manual of what the part # is or, more importantly, where the part is located although if I was to guess it's on or near the shift lever.

Dealership says ignition switch.

I've been through the FSM. I am right there with you, I went through the diag and the transmission linkage worked fine.

Look at the pinout for the ignition switch, provide 12V power to the starter signal, if it cranks with that then you know its the ignition switch.

Thanks, simple fix, once it was found. It had to be a high wear item.

Hey, I'm having a similar problem on an 06 KJ. Radio and everything works, battery is good, I can jump the starter solenoid and get the motor to crank but it won't fire??? Even with the key in the 'on' position, and even when someone turns the key to 'start' and then back to 'on' when I jump the solenoid.....everything was fine, and then it just automatically won't start. Does it sound like the ignition for me as well??? No check engine light, nothing comes up on code scanner.

Is the ignition switch a special dealer item?? Is it the actual ignition where you put the key or is it something behind this??? Thanx!!

The ignition switch is seperate from the ignition lock. I just checked Advanced autoparts and they have the switch for $20.99

Well, it had to go to the dealer and they replaced the entire steering column saying that there were some frayed/messed up wires in the column....thing worked fine one day, wouldn't start one afternoon. Oh well. It works again.

I have a 2006 CRD, have addressed most of the usual issues (rear diff rebuilt, oil drain threads stripped (added drain valve), air being sucked into the fuel/water filter/seperator, alternator decoupler pully replacement etc.) But now the Jeep ocasionally will not start.

The Battery is 3-months old, the car may or may not start, I replaced the ignition switch unit ($16 at autozone) as many threads talk about issues with it. The key does turn the switch and all the parts in the mechanism are intact and working. I have checked the fuse and switched relays but believe there is an interlock with the neutral/park position switch but not sure. Anyone have a similar experiance and know a fix? How about a photo locating the Neutral/Park Position switch.... is it the switch inside the transmission with the large connector or is it on the side, is it an inductive sensor or a mechanical switch, is adjustment all that is needed? Even moving the shifter through all positions with the key in the start position does nothing?? Any ideas?

UPDATE: went back to the car (in a local forest parkling lot) to run through the possibilities again... finally tapped the starter motor/solenoid with a wrench and the engine started. Looks like I need an new solenoid but the parts store only lists the complete assembly with motor for $210 + Core $35.

Looks like a pain to get access to replace.....

I see solenoid replacements on aftermarket parts websites - but they warn that some customization may be required. Probably a euphemism for "you'll have to pull the solenoid heat shield" or some such thing.. perhaps change the connector on the wire end. Don't know... still, at $35 or so it may be worthwhile.

Alternatively, pull the starter and take it to a local shop for repair? They could replace the solenoid.
