I've had my 2006 KJ Sport for about 16 months now and over the last few months I've been fairly religious about keeping track of my gas mileage.

I'm in Morgantown, West Virginia... One of the only places in my life that I've discovered where it really is "uphill both ways" to get to places. Most of my driving is short, city-style driving on those same hills, back and forth to work and around town on various work and personal errands. When I hit the highway, I'm either going I-79 South towards Charleston, WV or I-79 North to Pittsburgh and beyond. I've been told that 79 between Morgantown and Charleston is the "hilliest" interstate per mile, but I've never heard any legitimate verification on that.

Over the past several times that I've kept track, I've averaged anywhere between 11mpg and 19mpg. With gas prices high, I've made a definite effort to not only drive less but be a more conservative driver and checking my tires to ensure they're at 33PSI several times a week.

I'm looking at possibly upgrading from the stock Goodyear tires to a BFGoodrich All/Terrain. As long as I stick with tires that are OEM recommended size will this alter my mileage at all for better or worse?

I've looked into lots of little things but was wondering if any KJ owners had any specific suggestions that have made a positive impact for them?

Yes you will see a hit in mpg's from the BFG's since they will be a LT tire.A better choice would be the Destination AT as it will perform better then the BFG and is still a "P" tire with a mileage warranty.

When you say perform better, do you mean on-road, off-road, or both?

For light/mild wheeling then both,the Destination AT's are a good tire.The "LT" BFG will hold up a tad better offroad only due to being a "LT" tire,but with BFG's quality the sidewalls cut easy on them.

Totally agree with Troy, Destination ATs will overall give you a better ride and for what you need better all around. They are a good riding tire, quiet and won't be as heavy as some of the others that people run being a P rated

For the highways you travel you're not going to get much better mileage really due to all of the hills. And yes no matter where you go its up hill!

I didnt notice any MPG loss or gain by changing to larger heavier tires. Granted the size change wasnt huge but the 225 hankook p tires (AKA ballons) made it ride like poo and were definitely ALOT lighter then the BFGs. Honestly you shouldnt see much of a loss sticking with the same size. Real world your talking fractions...

I live in West Virginia as well. Lifted,245/75's and 158K miles. I get around 15-17 around town and 18-20 (rarely) highway. It's taken a while to develop a routine that maximises mileage. Using the cruise,coasting and driving slow all contribute.

So what would be the best All Season tire for highest mph yield?

Destination AT? or ??

I don't take my CRD offroad really so that isn't a factor. We have a 99 Dodge for that

I would get the Firestone Destination ATs. I ran the 225/75/16 on my Jeep when I first bought it; and to add one of the rear tires had two plugs in it. I put a good amount of miles on them until my friend sold me his Wrangler STs (same size) off his '10 JK. Honestly I'm going back to ATs when it's time to buy tires. I've enjoyed the mudders but my wallet would be much happier with ATs.
It would help if I would re-gear to 4.10s but I'm not doing that til next spring.

lol you guys are talking about mileage...... i get between 12 and 16 mpg which sucks but i expect it being that i drive a heavy booty SUV. guess that is the price we pay

I don't drive the Jeep much anymore. Steady work has been rather elusive for the past couple years. I have a few motorcycles that get decent to great fuel mileage.

Im thinking about the general grabber HTS tires on 16x9 wheels. Will gas mileage vary alot between a 30" tire and a 31" tire, both being HTS tires?

First off a 16x9 wheel is well past excessive for a KJ. Get a 16x7 and be happy, or if you must get a 16x8.

As for a difference in MPG I highly doubt going from 30-31 makes a world of difference. I went from 225 75 16 p rated tires to 245 70 16 D rated AT tires and noticed no power or MPG difference.

16x7 seems to be the magic number for the KJs; and the 245/75/16 tire size is what most people run.

No immediate mpg difference in a 30-31" tire. Unless you get a heavy tire, like a mud tire or the LT size then you would see a significant drop in mpgs. I run LT 245/75/16 BFG KM2s on stock Liberty Renegade wheels. I get 15 mpg or less in mixed city/highway driving; but when driving long distances I probably get 17-18 mpg. I have yet to calculate my long trip mpgs.

The best thing for you is get a set of 16x7 Cragars or Jeep Wrangler MOAB wheels that are 16x7; and run a 245/75/16 tire. Other tire sizes you can run are: 235/70/16, 245/70/16, 255/70/16 and you might be able to do a 265/70/16. Is your Jeep Liberty lifted?

I know that they are wider than normal but I have always wanted these wheels and came up on a good deal so I bought them

the guy I talked to had 255/70/16's mounted on the moto metals and he had to trim but was ok with rubbing. I will be lifting the jeep before I buy tires. and mount them. I hadn't planned to buy wheels and tires for awhile but like I found a great deal

I also don't know what direction I should go with the lift bc I have a diesel

255-70s are too narrow for a 9 inch wheel no matter what someone told you. Plus you can't lift a CRD as high as a gasser and even more problems, resell them and get some of your money back
