Just picked up this 06 Sport with 119,000 miles. EGR is blocked off. I replaced the glow plugs and while doing that I clean the very stopped up intake elbow. The variable part of the turbo was also stuck. I rebuilt the turbo. Very low on power. If I hold it the floor it will go to at least 4500 rpm and leaves a huge cloud of black smoke. Could the cat also be stopped up?

Howdy r1perk Welcome to LOST

have you checked the Turbo hoses - split under pressure is the standard for no power & lots of smoke.

Thanks for the reply.
I had them off but I didn't notice any thing. How much boost should I have?

I have rechecked the turbo hoses, they are fine. No leaks. Still no power and lots of smoke. Does any one know the average high boost pressure?

Peak boost in stock form is roughly 20 psi. Do you have a check engine light on?

Check light was for glow plugs. I have replaced them but still unpluged as I have not been to the dealer for the upgrade flash.

Intake elbow was coked, turbo variable vanes were frozen also, rebuilt turbo. Checking timing today, new belt was installed at 102k, tensioner is a little soft. Could it be this is letting the cams be a little late?
Corrected the tensioner, no belt movement, not the problem.

My cheap code reader will not link to this CRD.

I'll take the intake off next. Maybe it is coked can't get air.

Intake is off - roller rockers very sloppy. One has all of the bearings on the bottom. I believe they are so weak they are not opening the valves enough. That my story and I'm sticking to it. Three lifters also fell apart when the rockers were removed.
All new rockers and lifters are needed. Can't wait to see the price for these!

How could the rockers be sloppy already at 119,000 miles? Victim of a broken timing belt?

I don't know. I just brought the Jeep a couple weeks ago. The owner did not mention a broken belt. The motor had some extra knocks when he decided to sell. My dealer offer to repair it not more $12,000. I brought with the intention of repairing It myself. I like a good challenge. It now has 118,500 miles. The owner said he paid $1000 to have the belt replaced at 102k. I believe him. Water pump, idlers, and belt all look new. I do know the rockers come the lifters attached and they about $62 each. I have not the least suggestion as to why the rollers are so bad.

I can now tell you the cam gears are NOT keyed to the cams. That is why the timing marks on the cam gears are useless!

I am sure this Jeep in the victim of a failed TB. 14 of the rockers are damaged, only 2 survived. Wholesaleonline in FL. gave me a deal on the price ONLY $740 including shipping for all 16 rockers. Now I need the torque sequence for the intake/valve cover. Any one have the info?

At the bottom of the Noob guide is a link to some manuals - they should have the data

What state are you in? In many you would be entitled to return to seller for.a.full refund (even a private one).
Sounds like you are very competent mechanically and already have a strong commitment to this vehicle (required).

I hope someone who has experience with rocker failure without valve damage will comment. I would definitely run this by Keith at GDE. You may be better off to buy a good used head rather than just replacing the rockers.

KY. I bought it knowing it was knocking. Seller was very honest in explaining everything he knew about it.

I still have good compression, so the head and valves should be good. The PO's wife drove this jeep 16k after the timing belt failure/replacement with the bad rockers. They only stopped driving when the the worst rocker gave up and started to make a knocking noise.

The combination of all the information on this site is the only way I am able to repair this engine. That why I am sharing my story with everyone.

Thanks to everyone for making it possible.

Well, if you paid less than $6K, you can even put in a used motor and be OK.

The rockers are supposed to break when the valves hit the pistons. However, several members have sustained valve damage when their timing belts broke. I agree, though, that if you have compression to spec, you may be OK, though I have no experience checking compression on a diesel and it may not be as simple as with a gas motor.

GDE will rent you all the special tools needed to work on the VMM motor.

Wasn't planning too, checked it out and it still seems pretty darn good, but will have a closer look when I get home :-)

I would highly recommend you replace the timing belt. Looking at the belt will tell you very little. I am replacing all of the rockers now because of a broken belt. The rockers are $62 each and there are 16 of them.
