I've just recently completed a remanufactured engine install and it's running good. While I had the engine out I went ahead and bought a euro torque converter and installed it. I also changed both transmission filters and installed about 2.5 gallons of new Mopar ATF+4 fliud. The transmission ran normal for the first several hundred miles but now, once it is warmed up to normal operating temperature it "shutters", for lack of a better description, when I come to a stop.
Any ideas what might cause this?

I am planning to get the GDE engine and transmission tunes in the very near future which may resolve the problem but I thought I'd post it and see if you guys have any insight.

FYI - other MODs/stuff that I have done are: (not that they have any effect on the transmission issue)
* installed a blank steel plate on the egr.
* installed the Provent elephant hose MOD.
* installed the fixed flex fan.
* installed a fuel lift pump.
* have Samco turbo hoses.
* tore down and cleaned the turbo.

Have you checked the fluid level?

Yep, the fluid is about half way between the add and hot marks when at normal operating temp.

Now the problem has gotten worse.

Once it is warmed up I can hear a chattering noise coming from the tranny when it's in park or neutral. When I shift into reverse or drive it locks and shuts the engine down, not every time but it has happened a couple of times. It's not sounding good. I'm not a tranny guru so I've called a good mechanic friend and he is going to take a look at it tomorrow.

Did you put locktite on your flexplate bolts and torque them to spec?

I would immediately check that all the flexplate bolts are still there and are tight BEFORE starting it again.

What is the fluid like? Clean? Does it smell burnt?
I have heard of at least one case where the seam on the pan filter (the flat one) on the 545RFE split and lost prime, but this was also associated with transmission slippage mainly between 3rd & 4th

Possible, but he said it does it once it is warmed up and it sometime stalls the engine.
Loose bolts would make a noise hot or cold...I can't see how they would stall the engine.

Just speaking from experience......When my TC bolts pulled the threads out of the TC my truck had starting issues and stalled......It threw some kind of non communications code or something like that....HJ

I have a similar thing happening to me occasionally. My problem occurs usually when the engine and tranny are cold--there's stop sign about 200 feet away from where I park and my engine will ocassionally shudder when I stop at the sign when I get going in the morning. I give it throttle and the sensation goes away as the vehicle picks up speed. Happens every couple of months.

New TC fixed that for me. Do you get shudder if you put heavy throttle to it in lockup?

If you're asking me: only very occasionally if I'm chugging up a hill.

Both you and the OP, yeah thats the first sign of TC failure. Itll get worse and worse tha shudder will turn into a stall at a stop and youll get shudder on flat surfaces at WOT in lockup. I temporarily fixed the stalling at stops by bumping the UD idle RPM by 200 but the only fix is a new TC. I procrastinated till I ended up driving 600 miles with it shuddering nomater how much throttle I applied (that SUCKED).

Check driveshaft universals. I have put in 5 sets. Some times I grease them somtimes I forget....The jeep shudders when ever they are shot....and it feels like its comming from the tranny...

Rattling in Park/Neutral was one of the checks in the recall procedure. If memory serves me that meant you needed a new pump as well as the torque converter.

A new pump is what solved my stalling when coming to a stop. Went through this a couple of years ago, don't have time to search it out now.

for the transmission issue I bet if you check level properly when it is at normal operating temperature you will see is low. and one sugestion, remove the plate from the egr and run the orm mod. why, Check your codes and you will see a p0299 (low boost) caused by an increase FCV closure due to the lack of EGR circulation. actually just run the orm, you dont even have to take the plate if you want to. (I did though)
