While working on an unrelated electrical issue (that I still can't figure out!) I was underneath my Jeep and noticed an oil leak and what appears to be a missing bolt! (see attached photos). I just downloaded the service manual, but have been unable to locate the type of replacement bolt I would need, or anything relating to an oil leak in that area (case just to the rear of the oil filter...see pictures). Hopefully one of you guys can help me out. This forum has been an invaluable resource so far!

The missing bolt photo didn't turn out very well, but it appears to need the same type of bolt as the oil covered one in the other photo, as they are on the same housing

I suspect the oi leak is not coming from the missing bolt. If it were, it would probably be a much larger leak. Maybe somewhere above, and the oil is running down the side of the engine? Maybe turbo oil lines?

X2

If you can't trace down the leak, maybe hit it with some degreaser and then monitor the area for leakage.

There are one or two places on the bellhousing where it looks like a bolt should be, but that's for a different vehicle application with a right hand starter. It looks like a rear main seal leak, unless you can trace it all the way up to the turbo. It might be coming from there.

Thanks for the tips guys! I've run out of trouble shooting time today (family obligations trump mechanical issues, or so my lady says). I'll try degreasing first thing in the morning, and see if that narrows down the issue. If its from the turbo, or the main seal, do any of you happen to know how expensive/ complicated that fix might be, or how long I can hope to skate by before needing to fix (cash is tight at the moment).

If it was the turbo pressure line you would know it. It would be a bigger leak and would blow back coating way back pass the rear bumper. Unless you have a constant drip from the rear main seal I would leave it alone.

The turbo oil drainback tube is a common leaker, either at the gasket on bottom side of turbo or at the rubber port on side of block. The degreasing is a good recommendation. If you remove the air box and duct any turbo leaks can be detected. At least you have good rust protection on the undercarriage!

yeah... it looks like the rear engine main seal might be leaking,if it was like that on the other side of the engine it could be coming from the positive crancase ventilation at the FCV, but on that side be the oil filter looks like the engine rear main seal.
